The award–giving ceremony took place on the fourth day. There was only one spot for the international honor, and Valerie came in second, narrowly missing out on the award.
While her mentors and principal were lamenting, Valerie just smiled. She was here to prove herself, with no intention of pursuing this career path. So. fighting for that spot was pointless.
Nonetheless, this remained a tremendous honor for Reano University.
Before noon, a banner had appeared on the campus, proclaiming, “Congratulations to Valerie Clark, Jewelry Design major, Class of 2017, for winning second place in the International Jewelry Design Competition.
All the students at Reanor University were abuzz. After all, Valerie was a prominent figure, not only attracting attention because of her status on campus but also as a composer who had gained a huge fanbase both at Reanor University and across the internet.
The forums were flooded with posts, all praising her. However, Valerie was unaware of all this. When she got her phone back after receiving her award. her WhatsApp had been flooded with congratulatory messages.
Adrienne: [Oh my god! My girl is truly awesome! It’s such a pity I didn’t go with you this time. Otherwise, I would give you a good celebration. I’m so happy for you. You’re awesome!]
One of the messages was from Kelly: [Valerie, you’re incredible! Second place in such a prestigious competition. It’s amazing! When are you coming back to Reano City? I want to throw you a big celebration.]
[Mom has just found out and is over the moon. She’ll give you an awesome position if you decide to work at her company this time.]
After going through each message and replying to them all, Valerie finally left the venue.
Mandy had come to pick her up. Knowing Valerie’s favorite bakery, she especially bought a cake from the shop to celebrate.
The cake’s packaging was especially exquisite, with a beautiful metal swan carefully sealing the bow. One could tell that it was pricey at a glance.
As Valerie took the cake, smiling, and headed out, a sudden, shrill scream pierced the air from somewhere nearby.
Valerie looked over following the sound. However, before she could make out anything, she heard Mandy shout in a low voice, “Madam, watch out!”
Valerie distinctly heard something whiz through the air. The next moment, a hole appeared in the wall right behind where she had just been standing, still smoking.
At the sight of it, a chill ran through her body. ‘That was a gun?‘ she thought.
Mandy grabbed Valerie and said in a low voice, “Move!”
Valerie’s legs were weak, barely able to keep up with Mandy’s pace as Mandy led her to the car. Suddenly, as if sens box in her hand and held it up beside her face.
mething, Valerie lifted the cake
Her hand felt the weight in an instant. Clearly, something had pierced straight through it. At that moment, Valerie’s mind went completely blank.
“Madam, get down!” Mandy’s voice rang out with a buzzing echo, but Valerie still reacted instantly, crouching under the seat. Mandy shielded her with her body, then let out a muffled groan.
Valerie froze, her body stiffened, and she immediately blurted out, voice trembling, “Mandy, are you okay?”
The car sped off like the wind, bullets piercing through its body as it went, filling the air with a chaotic clatter of metallic pings and clangs.
“I’m fine,” Mandy said,
Chapter 181
Valerie’s whole body stiffened. Deep down, she thought, ‘There’s no way Mandy’s okay; not after what’s just happened!
However, Mandy tightly pressed against her back, not letting go for a moment, shielding her until the car was safely out of the danger zone. Only then dia Mandy say, “We’re safe now, Madam.”
Although Maya sounded calm, her voice was noticeably weaker.
Valerie was drenched. She got up, looking pale, glanced at Mandy, and suddenly felt strengthless, waves of nausea rising in her stomach.
She set the cake before her and took a closer look. A bullet had pierced straight through the metal swan and stuck in its body. The elegant ornament was now completely distorted.
‘If it had hit me instead…‘ Valerie thought, and a chill ran down her spine. She could not help shivering.
Suddenly, she scrambled to her feet and turned around to see Mandy’s back. Mandy’s black clothes were soaked through, blood gushing out nonstop
Valerie’s scalp prickled with fear. She shouted frantically, “Hospital, get to the hospital now!” Her voice cracked into a desperate sob.
Fortunately, the driver, a highly–trained veteran, kept his cool and swiftly rushed them to the Endver City Military Hospital.
Mandy, her face ashen, tried to comfort Valerie. She said weakly, “Madam, I’m fine…”
“Shut up!” Valerie’s face turned ashen as she frantically tore her clothes, pressing the fabric against Mandy’s wound. However, the blood just kept gushing out, refusing to stop.
Valerie finally broke down, tears rolling down like a broken string of beads. Choking between sobs, she pleaded, “Please, don’t let anything happen to you… I’m begging you, please stop talking… Please… don’t… don’t die…”
When they arrived at the hospital, Mandy could not hold on any longer. Valerie watched as Mandy was taken into the emergency room. Only when the emergency light flickered on did she heave a sigh of relief.
However, as soon as she let out a breath, it was as if all the strength drained from her body. Her vision went black, and she collapsed straight to the ground.
