When Nathalie saw Greta’s text, she was caught off guard. She hesitated for a second before opening it—and found, to her surprise, it was a video.
Onscreen, Miranda appeared: her hair snowy white, her frame shrunken with age, slumped in a wheelchair. Her voice was a fragile murmur. “Nellie’s always been the most obedient, loving daughter. It’s my fault—I shouldn’t have favored Greta, shouldn’t have let Nellie suffer so much. If I could turn back time, I’d never have treated Nellie that way, never would’ve spoiled Greta. I made Greta selfish, let her believe she deserved everything. I was wrong… Nel, please forgive me. Just come see me, won’t you?”
“My time is running out. All I want is your forgiveness. Otherwise, I can’t rest in peace.”
As soon as the video ended, another message from Greta popped up: “Happy now? Seems like everyone in my life ended up loving you more and leaving me behind. That old woman’s got dementia now, and all she remembers is how perfect you are. Is this what I deserve?”
Morris glanced at Nathalie, worry flickering in his eyes. Without a word, he reached out and squeezed her hand. Nathalie grinned at him. “Don’t worry about me. I’m okay.”
She started talking about the Brown family, but her tone was calm—gone was the old hurt and anger, as if she were talking about strangers. “I used to hate them. But honestly, I’m grateful. They made me stronger.”
Morris heard the soft steadiness in her voice, saw the peace in her eyes, and finally let his own tension go. “Nathalie, you’ve really moved on, haven’t you?”
She nodded. “I won’t let people who don’t matter take up space in my heart again. From now on, this place”—she patted her chest—“is just for you.”
Morris beamed, happiness lighting up his whole face.
“She really doesn’t look like she’s got much time left,” he said, then, a little shyly, “Babe, are you going to visit her?”
Nathalie shot him a playful look. “What did you just call me?”
Morris grinned and waved their bright-red marriage certificate. “Wife! I’m official, you know. Your husband, with the paperwork to prove it.”
