Morris was a mess of nerves. He rubbed the bridge of his nose, pressing hard until the dull ache finally cut through the haze in his head and brought him back to reality.
“Nathalie, there’s something I need to tell you.” After endless hesitation and swallowing his words a dozen times, Morris finally blurted it out. “I’ve thought about it. If you’re really set on having this baby, then the kid deserves a dad. And you… being pregnant and unmarried, you’ll get torn apart by internet trolls. I’m worried you won’t be able to handle all that alone.”
Nathalie’s eyes grew wide. She held her breath, waiting for what came next.
Morris looked straight at her, voice steady. “Nathalie, I’m the father.”
It was as if a storm had finally passed. The world felt clean and bright again, everything settled.
Nathalie just stared for a moment, stunned, before his words finally sank in. She couldn’t help it: a huge smile broke across her face.
“I know.”
Now Morris was the one left speechless. “Wait—so you wanted to keep the baby because of me?”
All the boldness Nathalie had kept bottled up came out in a rush. “Of course! You know I like you. I chased you for ages and you never said yes. Now you’re the father of my child—of course I’m thrilled!”
Morris broke into a grin.
In that moment, he felt nothing but gratitude. Thank goodness it was Nathalie.
Only she would never care that he was a man with more than a few issues—fragile health and all.
He squeezed her hand. “Nathalie, I’m sorry you have to go through this.”
That apology held a world of meaning.
But to Nathalie, it was nothing at all.
