The whole room erupted.
Dominick, who had been on the fence, turned to Desmond, his eyes shining. “Desmond, then tell us, what does Lydia actually do when she’s not in class or on campus?”
“She just sleeps in the dorm,” Patricia announced from the debate panel, sounding completely certain.
The crowd stared in disbelief.
“Seriously?”
“She skips class to sleep in her room?”
“Maybe she’s doing CAR-T research in her dreams,” someone joked, and a few people laughed.
Patricia, noticing everyone’s growing doubts about Lydia, added, “Our counselor even went to her dorm to drag her to class, but Lydia wouldn’t budge. She just stayed in bed, sleeping.”
Kevin looked at Patricia, his tone gentle but firm. “You can’t judge someone just by what you see. Lydia has her own way of learning. When I invited her to Capital Med School, I made it clear that her study schedule was hers to manage. That’s a privilege she earned as the top scorer in the country.”
Patricia had nothing to say to that.
Rosie spoke up, her tone thoughtful. “Sir, if Lydia never goes to class or the lab, how did she learn medicine? How could she be involved in CAR-T research?”
Kevin laughed. “Did it ever cross your mind that maybe she was already a medical genius before any of you took your finals? Maybe what you’re all struggling to learn is just the basics for her.”
The room went silent. For a moment, everyone just stared in shock.
Was that possible?
How could an eighteen-year-old…
“No way, that can’t be! She doesn’t even come from a family of doctors, and I’ve never seen her name on any list from the International Medical Association!” Daisy’s face had gone white. She shook her head, looking like she wanted to believe it was all just a bad joke.
Plenty of people in the audience were starting to wonder if Kevin was just covering for Lydia. If she couldn’t prove it, everyone would see her as a cheater.
Daisy lifted her chin. “Show us, then. Seeing is believing.”
“Alright,” Lydia said. She tapped her phone a few times, and suddenly, a video began playing on the big screen.
The footage showed a research facility none of them had ever seen before. On the wall, clear as day, were the words “CAR-T Experimental Research Base.”
Everywhere you looked, the place screamed high-tech.
Lydia, dressed in a lab coat, was holding a folder and speaking to a group of four or five other people, all wearing lab coats too.
From this angle, Lydia’s face was front and center, while the others had their backs to the camera. It looked just like one of those moments when the boss calls out an employee in front of everyone.
