Nadine's response only deepened the shadows on Brad's already dark expression. Her response not only answered Zara's question but also indirectly cleared up Brad's confusion.
Since they were already divorced, why would they get back together? If they were just going to get back together, their divorce would not have happened in the first place.
Besides, Nadine felt that her life had been much better and more fulfilling since leaving that miserable marriage. Why would she willingly walk back into that swamp? Six years had been more than enough to show her how utterly broken their marriage was.
Brad's expression wasn't her concern, and frankly, she didn't care.
Brad flicked his lighter, and a small flame flickered to life. The flame illuminated the man's dark face and revealed a cold, menacing glint in his eyes. He was very displeased with Nadine's answer, yet he didn't know how to handle the situation with her.
When Zara popped the question, he had been eager—perhaps even hopeful—to hear Nadine's response. But now that he had, the hope he'd held onto was crushed in an instant.
Initially, when Nadine had asked for a divorce, he thought it was just a way to get his attention, dismissing her actions as childish. Later, when he realized she'd been using him as a substitute for Jack, he felt disappointed and eventually agreed to the divorce.
He'd assumed that without him, her perfect substitute, Nadine would be devastated and come crawling back. But that didn't happen. Instead, she'd walked away without a backward glance, her hair fluttering in the wind like nothing had happened.
Now that Zara had painted his intentions so clearly, he couldn't believe Nadine had the audacity to reject him. She simply didn't know what was good for her.
