It was one o’clock in the morning.
After spending the whole day outside, Ruby leaned against the passenger seat and unknowingly fell asleep.
When Blaine noticed that she was fast asleep, he removed one of his hands from the steering wheel and covered her with the black coat which had slid off her shoulders.
Blaine accidentally brushed his hand against her skin. Subconsciously, she shifted her body to the other side and fell back into slumber.
The car sped off down the Brook Highway.
Blaine withdrew his hand and placed it on the steering wheel again. After that, he sighed heavily.
Though he was glad that she was by his side now, his feelings for her were not reciprocated. It tugged at his heartstrings, and he could feel a pang in his heart whenever he received cold treatment from her. The feeling was terrible.
He did consider asking Nine for help in recalling her “hidden” memories that had been locked away within her brain using hypnosis.
However, Blaine had his dignity too. He would want to regain all the things that were lost even if he had to do them from scratch. This included capturing her heart despite the fact that the odds of success were almost zero.
For the past ten years, she had no memories of him, while the White Wolf held a special place in her heart. To her, White Wolf’s life was much more important than hers, and she was willing to die for him. He was aware of these things all along.
His jealousy and these remorseful feelings seeped into his veins and pervaded his heart.
What kind of love could withstand the test of ten years without their cherished partner by their side?
She had been in his heart for a long time. His memories and yearning for her had penetrated every part of his body; he doubted that he would be able to completely remove her from his life even if he tried.
That feeling of taking her away felt like suicide to him.
...
Soon, they arrived at Kingswood Mansion.
Ruby was still sound asleep and did not look like she would wake up any time soon.
Tilting his head sideways at Ruby, he quietly gazed at her while leaning against the driver seat.
She looked much gentler while asleep. It was unlike her usual aloof and aggressive demeanor.
Blaine lifted his hand and lightly grazed her nose.
His eyes were full of affection toward her.
Blaine seemed to feel much better after a while. With both hands behind his head, he leaned against the seat and rested with his eyes closed.
…
Cindy waited for Blaine the entire night.
As Blaine stepped into the house, Cindy headed toward the entrance immediately to welcome him. “Bl—”
Her voice trailed off when she saw Blaine carrying Ruby in his arms.
Blaine gestured to her with his eyes to keep quiet before heading toward the bedroom.
Cindy stood rooted at the spot, her fists clenched.
Blaine gently placed Ruby onto the bed. Before he was able to switch on the bedroom lights, Ruby wrapped her arms around his neck.
Startled, Blaine crouched by the bedside and watched her with his hand on one of her arms.
She muttered in her dreams, “Aret, please don’t file a divorce... it’s unbearable for me…”
Why could anyone else not see how sad she really was?
Everyone thought she was a strong person and would not be emotionally affected even if she fell in love.
Blaine was stunned momentarily and his face darkened upon hearing her murmur.
Slowly and gently, he removed her arms and sat by the bedside.
In the cold night, a sliver of moonlight spilled into the room through the window. Under the faint moonlight, he could see tears from the corner of her eyes. Just as he wanted to wipe them away, she grabbed his hand and buried her face into his palm.
Like a child, she held his hand firmly with both of hers.
Blaine picked up the photos and gave Wayde a sarcastic smile. “I can’t believe you have the free time to pry into my private life.”
“Hmph. I wouldn’t have known this if you didn’t do such a thing.”
Blaine glanced at the couple in the photos. It was none other than him and Ruby. The photos were taken when they hugged and kissed on the streets.
Although the photos were low in resolution, they could still pose as evidence against him.
“Do you think it’s appropriate to accuse me of committing treason?” Blaine’s eyes were icy-cold as he clutched the photos.
“It’s true that you have some dealings with the task force agent from the Light Organization. The reason why we didn’t interrogate you was out of respect for the Dark Organization.”
Blaine could not help but snicker upon hearing such a ridiculous reply. “I didn’t know you still felt that way toward the Dark Organization.”
Wayde gritted his teeth and glared at Blaine. “Blaine, you’re just a young man. Watch your mouth when you’re talking to me! Ten years ago without authority, you gifted Easthill Valley, our transport hub to Country Z, without any return for the sake of a task force agent from the Light Organization. We turned a blind eye on that matter the last time. I’ve asked someone to investigate her and she’s indeed the same woman who affected your decision-making skills ten years ago! What’s happening? Are you being controlled by her?”
“She’s not a member of the Light Organization anymore.”
“Blacklisting her is just a mere trick to deceive people and yet, you believe this lie? From what I think, it’s either you’re allured by her beauty or have ill-intentions toward our country!”
In this matter, Blaine knew he was at a disadvantage.
Previously, Wayde worked for Paul and the Jeffords Family was the country’s founder. Besides that, he established many great achievements when he was young and was quite prestigious among the ministers.
Moreover, it was a great opportunity for his haters to bring this matter up and use it against him. As Wayde took the lead in reprimanding him, the other ministers followed suit, ridiculing Blaine as well.
Blaine clenched his fist around the photos and his face darkened. He stared at Wayde and asked, “Are you worried about me colluding with our enemy, or are you merely wanting to take revenge for the ex-president who’s your son-in-law too?”
Wayde’s shortcoming was exposed on the spot as his face reddened in anger. He sprung up from his chair and pointed his finger at Blaine. "You! What nonsense are you talking about!"
Blaine stood up calmly and spoke impassively. "Instead of government affairs, you guys are here to talk about my private life! Since our agenda is not work-related, please excuse me for leaving."
Blaine walked toward the exit, leaving all the cabinet members behind. Before he left the meeting chamber, he recalled something and turned around to wave the photos at Wayde. "General Officer Wayde, I won’t return you these photos. However, if you continue hiring people to shadow me, I doubt that you’ll have the chance to see these photos again next time."
“You!”
