Blaine walked past Ruby and sat on the couch.
The man did not say anything the entire time. However, his silence and aloof demeanor stressed Ruby out.
Although Ruby was a qualified task force agent, she seldom went out for a mission nor experienced such an emergency situation. As she was only eighteen, she was barely considered an adult if one were to put her Light Organization identity aside.
Without a strong mentality, her true identity would definitely be exposed if she failed to outsmart the lie detector.
While no one was noticing, Ruby slowly moved her hands to her back. Although Blaine was seated not far away from her, there was definitely a blind spot where Blaine could not see what she would be doing.
Without averting her gaze, she fished out a needle from her pocket and prick her finger with it. Although it was painful, she did not dare to show any emotions on her face. If she were to even crease her brows slightly due to the pain, Blaine would have noticed it and be suspicious toward her.
Pain excited one’s heart, increasing their heartbeat. The principle behind a lie detector was that one’s heartbeat would fluctuate when the person was lying. Hence, one’s heart rate was the sole factor in deciding whether the tester was lying or not.
While holding in the pain, she glanced at the lie detector and asked intentionally, “What’s this?”
Blaine stared intently at her and impassively replied, “It’s a lie detector.”
“You think I’m lying to you? But I really can’t remember any of my past.”
Blaine was not swayed by her words. “We’ll see if you’re lying or not when you answer some questions later.”
Ruby pouted on purpose. “Old men are just so sensitive.”
She mumbled impatiently while walking toward the lie detector, sitting there without any signs of fear.
Blaine had a keen sense of hearing, to the extent that he was naturally more sensitive to sound compared to ordinary people. Hence, he naturally heard the complaint she murmured to herself.
The man creased his brows. “What did you say? I’m an old man?”
He was just twenty-five. How was that considered old? He was just at an age where men were considered conceited.
Ruby huffed. “You’re older than me by seven years. Of course I’d think you’re old.”
The man’s gaze darkened. “Didn’t you lose your memories and can’t remember anything about yourself?”
If that was the case, how could she remember how old she was?
Shit.
Ruby’s heart skipped a beat. This type of question that one could answer naturally with a subconscious mind would easily expose her identity.
However, Ruby was not a typical eighteen-year-old girl. She answered without any hesitation, “I naturally know that I’m eighteen. After staying in the hospital for days, I’ve looked at my medical record many times. My age was stated eighteen but my name wasn’t written there. Oh, by the way, what’s my name? You haven’t told me my name yet.”
The man stared at her for three seconds before answering her in a cold tone, “I will let you know your name after carrying out this test.”
If she was caught lying, there was no need to give her a name anymore. She would be thrown into the river to feed the fish.
The girl pouted as she felt a little helpless. “Alright. What a petty person.”
She sat on the examination chair and subsequently pricked the needle even harder and deeper into her finger. It was so painful that she felt numb all over.
The specialist attached a lot of sensor patches on her body and after everything was ready, the specialist respectfully spoke to Blaine seated beside him, “Master Blaine, we can start now.”
It was normal for an eighteen-year-old girl to be scared of getting tired and dirty.
He walked toward the stairs and answered impassively without turning around to look at her. “You can stay at my house if you want but this is not a place where you can just get everything for free. You better get out of here when you’ve learned some life skills.”
Ruby was too lazy to argue about such petty stuff. After all, she was staying in his house so it would be a little inappropriate if she were to talk back to the house master. Since she had successfully convinced Blaine that she was not lying, the next thing she should do was think of ways to get near Blaine and obtain some confidential information from him.
She followed him upstairs and asked him like a curious kid, “You haven’t told me my name yet.”
The man was momentarily stunned. He stopped walking and turned around to glance at her. He then uttered, “Softie. That’s your name.”
Ruby was totally speechless.
Like naming a pet, he looked as if he was just randomly naming her whatever name that popped up in his mind.
‘He should’ve at least named me Blossom or Amber. I don’t even get one of those common names for maids. Softie? Why not just call me Hardie then?’ Ruby grumbled internally.
Ruby was grumbling upon having been given the name ‘Softie’ while struggling to get used to it. As she continued to follow Blaine up the stairs, Blaine stopped her.
“Don’t follow me. There’re many house rules here. If you’re unsure, you can ask Old K and he’ll tell them to you. I hope that you’ll keep this important rule in mind—don’t ever enter my study room.”
“Okay,” Ruby answered and nodded her head obediently. She stood by the stairs and did not walk further.
With his chin, he gestured for her to go down to the ground floor.
Having no choice, Ruby turned around and took her own sweet time to walk down the staircase.
