Hugo gave a brief nod of acknowledgment, then asked, "What would you like to drink, Diana?"
"Coffee," Diana replied.
"Sure." He walked to the office door, pulled it open, and looked toward the secretary seated at a nearby desk. "Wanda, make Diana a latte. Less sugar, more milk, and not too hot."
Wanda Greene looked up at him in surprise before quickly lowering her head again. "Right away, Mr. Kingston."
Her reaction was understandable. Even Diana found it a little strange. She had not expected Hugo to know her preferences in such detail.
Still, she did not read too much into it. "You have a good memory."
"Not really." Hugo smiled faintly. "I just happened to remember."
Diana said nothing. She lowered her gaze and flipped through the contract they had just signed. Silence settled between them for a few moments.
Soon, someone knocked on the office door.
"Come in."
The door opened, and Wanda entered carrying a cup of coffee. It was one of the Jillson Group's standard white mugs, with faint steam curling from the rim.
She walked over and gently placed it beside Diana.
"Ms. Hutton, your coffee."
Wanda did not leave immediately. Instead, her gaze lingered on Diana's face.
"Thank you." Diana glanced up at her.
As if realizing she had been staring, Wanda gave a small nod, turned, and walked briskly out of the office, quietly closing the door behind her.
Diana picked up the coffee and took a sip. The temperature was just right, and the balance of milk and sugar was perfect, exactly the way she liked it.
She set the cup down, looked at Hugo, and suddenly asked, "Your secretary hasn't been here long, has she?"
Hugo's phone buzzed. He was about to decline the call outright, but paused when he saw the caller ID.
Diana stood. "Go ahead and take it. I'll head out first."
Hugo gave a slight nod. "Travel safe, Diana."
He watched her leave the office before answering the call.
As Diana passed Wanda's desk, she caught a glimpse of the woman facing her computer screen as though she were focused on her work.
Yet Wanda's shoulders trembled ever so slightly. Diana paid it no mind. She walked past the desk with Nina and headed straight for the elevator.
The elevator stopped twice on the way down, picking up a few employees who chatted quietly among themselves.
When it reached the ground floor, the doors slid open, and Diana stepped out first. She had taken only a few steps when someone suddenly moved in front of her from the side.
"You're Diana?" The woman's voice was sweet but edged with barely concealed scrutiny and hostility.
