Ever since learning that Penelope wasn't the real daughter, Sydney had not had a proper opportunity to ask about Vee. Now that the topic had come up naturally, she decided to follow it.
"She should be found soon," Diana said quietly.
The words were right on the tip of her tongue.
'You are Vee.' But Diana swallowed them back.
Sydney nodded earnestly. "She will be. I'm sure of it."
At those words, Florence's eyes softened and grew moist without warning. She excused herself from the table.
After lunch, Sydney had just stepped outside when Diana called after her, "Sydney. Do you ever think about it? Whether your birth parents might still be out there looking for you?"
Sydney turned, puzzled. "Diana, where is that coming from?"
She had thought about it once, in an earlier chapter of her life. She had hoped she might find them someday. Now, that feeling had quietly faded. As long as she wasn't the child of someone who had caused harm, she no longer allowed herself to want much more than that.
"Nothing. Just asking." Diana smiled. "Aren't you curious about who they might be?"
"I used to be. Now..." Sydney paused and looked down at her belly as a small smile touched her lips. "Now I have the baby and all of you. That's more than enough."
Something tightened painfully in Diana's chest.
"Come on," she said gently. "I'll walk you to the car."
She opened the car door herself.
Sydney climbed in and waved through the window. "Go inside, Diana. It's cold."
"I will," Diana said, but she did not move. She stood there and watched the car grow smaller and smaller until it disappeared from sight.
A wistful look settled over her face.
In the car, Sydney found herself turning Diana's words over in her mind. She couldn't explain why, but something about the way Diana had asked that question felt as though it pointed to something else. She just could not grasp what it was.
