"What do you mean he won't be back?" The relief Sydney had just felt shot straight back into her throat. "Did something happen to him?"
Otherwise, why had only Nathan returned? There was still no sign of Julian or Peter. One anxious thought after another crowded her mind.
Hearing her voice begin to shake, Nathan realized she had misunderstood. He hurried to explain, "No, nothing happened. We actually gained quite a bit from it."
He added, "He is with Ms. Diana and Mr. Raymond Hutton right now."
Sydney studied his face. He did not look like he was lying. "You're not just saying that to calm me down?"
She had nearly miscarried not long ago. If Julian wanted to keep her from worrying, he might hide things from her.
"I'm telling the truth." Nathan looked ready to swear an oath. "If you don't trust Mr. Sterling, then trust Ms. Hutton. Or call her and ask yourself."
Only then did Sydney truly believe him. She let out a slow breath. "Then why did you come back early?"
"I came to pick up a few things." Nathan gave a vague explanation, then added quickly, "Please don't worry. I need to go find Elliot."
Aside from Sydney, the only person who could freely enter Julian's study was Elliot, who had stayed behind to protect her.
Sydney did not ask further questions. As long as Julian was safe, that was enough.
She only reminded him, "Be careful. All of you."
She knew Penelope led back to Megan. And behind Megan, the forces involved were even more complicated.
"We will. And we'll keep Mr. Sterling safe too," Nathan answered solemnly, then wasted no time and hurried upstairs.
…
That night, Sydney did not sleep well.
Morning finally came, bright and clear, yet no sound rose from downstairs.
Beside her, Tiffany watched her toss and turn, then sit up at last. "I don't need to go to the law firm today. Eat breakfast with me, then let's go shopping. It will help pass the time."
No matter how stable the pregnancy was, a sudden movement like that still carried risk.
Sydney forced herself to move carefully. Once she was steady on her feet, she still hurried to the door as fast as she dared, each step quick and eager.
Tiffany could only laugh helplessly behind her.
Since Tiffany was still in the room, Sydney opened the door and stepped outside at once. She pulled it mostly closed behind her, then looked up at the tall man standing there. All the worry in her bright eyes rose to the surface.
"Was it dangerous? Why are you only getting back now? Are you okay? Were you hurt?" As she spoke, Sydney circled him, checking him from head to toe.
Julian let her inspect him as long as she wished. Then he wrapped both arms loosely around her waist. "Not a scratch. It wasn't that dangerous. It was just complicated, so it took longer."
Sydney wanted to ask more. "Nathan told me…"
"Go wash up first." Julian gently rubbed her head. "Raymond is here too. He's downstairs waiting. You and Tiffany get ready, then come down for breakfast. We will talk while we eat."
