But Cedric remained calm. He asked, "Mom, how did you trace this back to me? Who gave you the lead?"
Cedric believed he was extremely careful. There shouldn't have been any way for them to find out this quickly. Did the Merlock family set Emma up for this?
Emma roared, "You haven't answered my question. Why did you do that?"
Cedric met his mother's gaze. "I did it to uncover the truth behind that car accident all those years ago."
Emma froze. "Wasn't the truth of that crash already clear? It was an accident. The Merlocks' driver ran a red light."
Was there more to it? Cedric's gaze sharpened. "I used to believe that, too. But now I know that the Merlocks planned the crash."
Emma was in denial. "That's impossible. Ruth and I are very close. You're practically her godson. Why would she hurt you?
"And what would she gain from it anyway? That accident wasn't even serious. You didn't get hurt at all."
Cedric growled, "No, I didn't. But Noelle's parents died."
Emma gasped. "Are you saying that wasn't an accident?"
Cedric stared at her solemnly. "Would I go this far if it were an accident?"
Emma's heart sank. After a pause, she sat down on the couch. "So, what exactly have you found?"
"The Merlocks orchestrated that crash to eliminate Noelle's parents and steal their place in the bid for that new energy project."
