Since it was discovered that the Merlock family was involved, it was obvious that the person Sean would identify as the mastermind was the Merlock family.
Wyatt seemed surprised. "Did the Merlock family have a grudge against us in the past?"
Donovan shook his head. "I looked into it. There wasn't any."
Noelle thought about it and said, "Do you all remember that clean energy project Mom and Dad went for bidding back then?"
Donovan looked up and replied, "I remember that the project was shelved after their death."
"The final winning bidder was the Merlock family. Mom and Dad had a good chance of winning, but to secure the bid, the Merlock family orchestrated that car accident and bribed Sean."
"So, that's what the truth was…" Donovan murmured as he slumped onto the couch, looking completely defeated.
After learning the real reason behind the accident, Frank fell silent. When he finally spoke a moment later, his voice was strained. "So, it wasn't an accident at all. It was orchestrated."
Noelle continued, "Exactly. Even if I hadn't thrown a tantrum that night wanting cake, the accident would've happened the next day when Mom and Dad left for the bid."
It was only brought forward because of her insistence on going out that night.
Frank was filled with guilt. "I'm sorry, Noelle. All these years, we shouldn't have said it was your fault and that you caused their death. You've been living with that guilt and fear for so long."
Donovan hung his head low and couldn't utter a single word. That was what he'd believed all these years, too, but it turned out to be a huge misunderstanding. Noelle had been the one bearing the brunt of all her brothers' anger.
