Noelle heard Donovan gritting his teeth and let out a cold smirk. She then sneered. "What's wrong? Finally willing to let go? Weren't you the one who used to shield Xenia like your life depended on it?"
Donovan was so furious he could barely breathe. He was still laid up in the hospital, and ever since he woke up last night, he had not gotten a wink of sleep. Now, all the money Xenia transferred was gone, too, without a single trace left behind.
Frank looked stressed out as well. "Noelle, we should set aside the past and work together right now. We need to figure out the truth behind the car crash and bring the person who killed our parents to justice."
Noelle said flatly, "It's too late. We've already tipped them off. The Merlocks are going to hear about this soon. Tell me, what's the point of teaming up with you two?"
She glanced at her phone. "And stop trying to use Xenia's life to bargain with me. I honestly couldn't care less if she lives or dies—hell, I'd rather see her dead."
"Noelle, that's not what Donovan meant," Frank cut in quickly. "What he meant is, Xenia's in our hands—she's leverage. She definitely knows something about Sean. Wouldn't it make more sense to work together and get to the truth faster?"
Frank had not slept a minute last night, either. He was still struggling to process the fact that Sean was actually alive.
"No, it wouldn't!" Noelle snapped coldly.
Donovan's temper flared. "Noelle, you know damn well working with me is the fastest way forward. Why the hell are you refusing?"
She replied calmly, "Simple. Now that you know Sean's alive, doesn't every second feel like torture? Guilt and regret—just sitting on your chest, making it hard to breathe?"
Frank and Donovan exchanged a glance. Then, they both looked down in silence. Last night had been excruciating. The weight of guilt and regret had been crushing.
Frank's voice was hoarse. "Noelle, the moment we learned the truth, we've already been paying the price."
Sometimes, living was a punishment in itself. Noelle remained unmoved. "Exactly. That's what I wanted—to watch you both suffer and to see you drown in guilt for the rest of your lives."
Donovan's voice cracked. "Noelle, what the hell do you want from us? I didn't know things were like this! I didn't do it on purpose! I'm paying for it now, too!"
Noelle's voice was detached. "This is only the beginning. You've spent years throwing that line in my face.
