"You idiot, and you believed something like that?" Donovan was fuming. He never imagined Xenia would pull another greedy stunt at such a crucial moment.
He slapped her hard. "I don't care what you do. You must get that money back. If you don't, I swear I'll kill you!"
How dare she mess around with that much money?
Xenia's eyes flashed with impatience after taking another hit. "Donovan, do you really think the deal with PZ Group was that easy to secure? The only reason they agreed is because I promised them these benefits.
"The Cantrells and the Merlocks have their eyes on this project, too. Why would PZ Group choose to work with the Liddells otherwise?"
She suddenly seemed like a completely different person. Donovan glared at her, angry at this show of assertiveness.
"You could've just told me about these behind-the-scenes deals. You're inexperienced. What if you'd been scammed?"
Kickbacks weren't exactly unheard of in the business world. Donovan wasn't so naive that he didn't understand that. What shocked him was that Xenia had dared to do it behind his back.
When had she become so bold?
Xenia snorted. "And would you have believed me if I had told you?"
She knew Donovan far too well. During the first transfer, he had watched every step, making it impossible for her to pull anything.
And the second transfer? He wouldn't sign off on it until after she married Wyatt. Wasn't that basically saying he didn't trust her?
Donovan sneered. "And look what happened. You did cause trouble, didn't you? I don't care how. Just get every cent back by tomorrow."
"I can't get it back right now," Xenia answered bluntly. "The project lead said the money is being invested. It'll be transferred to PZ Group's account in a week. No one will ever know."
"You moron, and you believe that crap?" Donovan nearly lost his balance with how angry he was.
