She knew when to be flexible to avoid a bigger loss.
"I'll agree to have Master Sayer apologize and to take care of you," Claudia said. "But you have to sign a settlement agreement."
York's face hardened. "Claudia, you're my wife. I'm letting him off the hook for your sake. Don't push it."
"Can you blame me for not trusting you after you deceived me for Ann?" she retorted.
The single sentence successfully silenced him.
York called out to Mark. "Go draft a settlement agreement for me to sign. And tell the security room to delete all of today's surveillance footage."
Mark nodded and left the room. Ten minutes later, he returned with the agreement. Only after York had signed it did Claudia finally relax.
She called toward the door, "Master Sayer, you can come in now."
Rock opened the door and entered. York, half-reclining on the bed, immediately scowled. "So you were hiding right outside?"
Rock walked over and poked a finger at York's leg. "So what if I was outside? You don't own the hospital."
York kicked Rock away, and in the process, Rock pulled the blanket off him.
Claudia felt a headache coming on. She vouched for Rock, "See, York? Was I wrong? He's having a relapse. His mind isn't right."
York rolled his eyes at her.
Claudia pulled Rock to the bedside and gave him a look. "Master Sayer, even if it wasn't intentional, you still hit someone. That was wrong. Apologize to Mr. Ferguson, and we can put this behind us."
Rock refused.
"If you don't listen," Claudia threatened, "I won't hang out with you anymore."
Claudia pouted slightly and left the room. Once they were out of the hospital, she repeatedly warned Rock to stay on his best behavior while York was admitted and not to provoke him.
After parting ways with Rock, Claudia went to her parents' house. She returned to York's room just before noon.
The butler and staff had already arranged lunch on a small table and departed. Seeing York sitting motionless on the edge of the bed, Claudia went over and helped him to the table.
They ate in silence.
York watched her, placing some food on her plate. "Take a nap after you eat. I'll call you if I need anything."
His sudden gentleness was unnerving. When Claudia didn't respond, York put down his fork and reached out to brush a stray strand of hair from her cheek.
Claudia flinched away, leaving his hand hanging in mid-air. He was about to speak when someone knocked on the door. Before Claudia could get up, Rock poked his head in. "Want some roast duck?"
