"It's better to resolve a feud than to let it fester," Claudia said. "I'm thinking of what's best for both of you."

York's cold expression was full of doubt.

"Master Sayer's insomnia has relapsed," she explained. "He was suffering from headaches and drowsiness. He didn't do it on purpose."

Before she could finish, York shot up in bed. "Claudia, you're a doctor, for God's sake! The hospital has records of Rock Sayer's recovery. He isn't sick. This was attempted murder!"

Claudia knew it wouldn't be this easy. "Master Sayer's condition has always been unstable. I'm his attending physician, I know his situation better than you do."

Right now, it was the only excuse she could offer. Rock was great, but when he lost his temper, he just went off the rails.

After a brief pause, she asked, "I'm asking you one more time: will you agree to a settlement or not?"

York stared at her, his lips pressed into a thin, hard line.

Seeing that he had no intention of backing down, Claudia said, "York, you know the Sayer family's standing in Europe. They aren't the Watkins family. They won't let you bully them."

Ignoring the pain in his leg, York stood up to face her. "Claudia, the Sayers might be formidable, but do you think the Ferguson family is made of paper? That anyone can provoke us?"

Claudia knew that Rock's car had crashed right into York's pride.

When the hard approach failed, she switched to a softer one. "The Ferguson Group has business interests in Europe, too. Don't sacrifice the greater good for a petty squabble. I'm saying this for your own sake."

They locked eyes. York just stared at her, silent.

Feeling uncertain, Claudia decided to call Hugh. As a lawyer, he would know what to do.

Claudia looked at him warily. "What conditions?"

York met her eyes. "Have that punk come here and apologize to me. And you will take care of me until I'm discharged."

"That's it?"

York nodded. "He hit me. I'm letting it go because of you, but an apology is non-negotiable. I'm injured, and you're my wife. It's not too much to ask you to take care of me until I leave the hospital, is it?"

Claudia hesitated. At the end of the day, she was the reason Rock Sayer had crashed into York. York was a cunning man, while Rock was young and impetuous—no match for him. Hugh had already bent his own rules to take her divorce case, a favor she still didn't know how to repay. She couldn't trouble him again unless it was absolutely necessary.
