Felix stood alone in the desolate hallway for a very long time.
After delivering those final words, Claire had walked into her room and shut the door, cutting him out completely.
He remained frozen in place, a suffocating wave of despair crushing his chest. Claire had said a heart doesn't turn to ice overnight. She had been hollowed out by his endless neglect, day after toxic day. And he couldn't blame anyone but himself. He had built this hell with his own two hands. He deserved every ounce of this agony. He had utterly destroyed the best thing that had ever happened to him.
He lost track of how long he stood there, only snapping out of his trance when Shawn Selwyn called his phone.
"Where are you? Why aren't you here yet?" Shawn demanded. "We've been waiting for three hours! You're the guest of honor tonight. Everyone is here for your birthday."
Felix gripped the phone tightly. It took him a long time to choke out a response. "She forgot my birthday."
It was the first time since they had met that she hadn't remembered.
In the past, no matter how chaotic her schedule was, Claire would always take the day off and fly back to Northcrest just to celebrate with him. But today, when she looked right at him, she hadn't said a single word about it.
He had waited in her hotel lobby all afternoon just for a glimpse of her. He had waited until nightfall, only to watch her pull up with Wilbur. In that moment of blinding jealousy, he had lost his mind and interrogated her.
And she had reminded him he was nothing more than her ex-husband.
Felix couldn't suppress the agonizing tightness in his throat. So, when Shawn told him to get down to the bar, he agreed. He desperately needed alcohol to numb the pain.
Back in her suite, Claire had just stepped out of the shower. Her hair was still dripping wet when a frantic, aggressive knocking started at the door.
Hotel staff would never knock like that.
Was it Felix refusing to take a hint again? The mere thought made Claire's blood boil. Why couldn't the man understand simple English?
She marched to the door and yanked it open, snapping before she even looked up. "Felix, haven't you done enough?!"
Her voice died in her throat.
