When Cassandra finally came to, the first thing she saw was Tammie sitting in the hospital room.
As soon as Tammie noticed her awake, she rushed over and settled beside her.
“Cassandra, you’re finally up. Any longer and I would’ve had you moved to another hospital,” she said, fussing with the bed’s remote until Cassandra looked a little more comfortable.
Cassandra leaned back against her pillow, her face almost ghostly pale. She looked like she’d been through hell and back.
“Mom, what’s happening at school? What’s the story? Did Fiona get some big thank-you from everyone?” Cassandra asked, her voice weak but sharp.
Tammie blinked in surprise. “Weren’t you unconscious? How do you already know all this?”
Cassandra stared at the ceiling. Was this really her mom? Anyone else’s mother would at least pretend to be gentle. Right now, Cassandra actually wanted to scream.
Her whole mood was a mess.
Tammie seemed to realize she’d put her foot in her mouth and quickly switched topics. “Are you hungry, honey? I could grab you something to eat.”
“I’m so mad I could live off rage alone,” Cassandra muttered, letting out a heavy sigh.
Tammie opened her mouth, about to say something, but stopped herself. The room filled with an awkward silence as mother and daughter just looked at each other, neither knowing what to say.
Grinding her teeth, Cassandra finally broke. “Mom, can you just tell me what happened after? I need to know.”
Tammie gave in and told her everything.
Josefina’s antidote pills had saved everyone—no one got seriously hurt. The school was scrambling to cover things up with the media, but rumors had already spread like wildfire. The more they tried to suppress it, the bigger it blew up.
Now everyone knew Cassandra was behind the whole thing. Parents of the other students were demanding answers, and the school was under fire.
If Cassandra even showed her face on campus, she’d be treated like a criminal.
She knew then—going back wasn’t an option.
Tammie looked at her, unable to hold back anymore. “Cassandra, who told you to do this? How could you even think of such a thing?”
Cassandra dropped her gaze, her face blank. Only she knew what she was feeling.
