But his attentiveness did not stop at the little things. Over the next few days, Lydia began to realize that the entire routine of the mansion was slowly changing. Mealtimes were set more regularly. Her prenatal checkup schedule was recorded well in advance. Even the household staff had been instructed not to give Lydia any tasks without Cale's approval.
One afternoon, Lydia had just stepped out of her room when a maid approached carrying a tray. "Ma'am, Mr. Cale asked you to eat before six."
Lydia frowned. "Is he even arranging my mealtimes now?"
The maid smiled faintly. "Sir only wants to make sure you don't eat late."
"And what if I refuse?"
"I think Sir will come himself."
Lydia let out a long sigh. Sure enough, a few minutes later, Cale appeared and sat down across from her. "You're changing my entire schedule. Even my working hours?"
"I'm adjusting them."
"With whom?"
"With you."
Lydia stared at him in disbelief. "I didn't ask for any of this."
Cale did not answer immediately. He simply looked at Lydia for a long moment before saying, "I know."
The tone of his voice made Lydia fall silent. Cale reached across the table, took her hand, and gently held it.
"I almost lost you both once," he said quietly. "I don't want to be in that situation again."
Lydia's eyes slowly warmed. She squeezed Cale's hand in return. "I'm not going anywhere."
"I know."
"Then don't worry too much."
Cale smiled faintly. "I'll try."
Lydia gave a small laugh. "Try?"
"Yes."
"That means you'll still keep an eye on me."
