Silas clenched his jaw. He tried to maintain his composure, but the muscles along his jawline had begun to tighten. Cale seemed not to notice the change. He continued reading the report in his hands.
"Some chose to surrender before our team arrived. Others tried to flee but were captured." He slowly closed the folder. "The rest chose to save themselves."
That last sentence struck Silas harder than the kick that had brought him down just a few hours earlier. The network he had spent years building, the people he had always believed would remain loyal, had collapsed in a matter of days.
"That's a lie." Silas's voice was hoarse, but he still tried to preserve his authority. "You're just trying to get inside my head."
Cale raised his gaze. "I never waste my time lying to someone who's already lost."
The room fell silent once again.
Silas searched the man's face for even the slightest hint of doubt, hoping that everything he had heard was nothing more than psychological warfare. But he found nothing except a certainty that slowly filled his chest with unease.
For the first time, he began to wonder whether there was still anyone out there who would come to save him.
Cale stepped closer until only a few paces separated them. "Your greatest mistake wasn't attacking me," he said quietly. "Your greatest mistake was choosing to lay a hand on the Devereux family."
His voice remained calm, but every word rang out with unmistakable clarity. "Naomi is the last heir of that family. You should have been protecting her, not making her the target of your obsession, threats, and violence."
There was a brief pause before Cale spoke again. He seemed to draw a long breath before saying, "And you involved Lydia, my wife."
Silas opened his mouth, but not a single word came out. Every justification he had clung to all this time suddenly lost its meaning when spoken before the man who had destroyed everything he had built.
On the other side of the room, Falcon struggled to lift his head. Though he was in far worse condition, he still forced a mocking smile onto his face.
"Finished preaching?" he sneered softly.
Cale turned to look at him without the slightest trace of emotion. He took a document from the folder and held it up where Falcon could see it.
