"Wait for me, Naomi," he said softly.
Ever since leaving the airport, Chris had not eased off the accelerator once. He gripped the steering wheel so tightly that his knuckles had turned white. His eyes never truly left the navigation screen, which continued to display a single destination on the outskirts of Carrington Bay.
The address Brandon had given him had become Chris's only hope. Although it might not be correct, it was the only lead they had since Naomi and Lydia were kidnapped.
He pressed the accelerator harder. The black car shot down the highway at a speed far beyond the normal limit. His mind was filled with only one hope.
Naomi.
Please let her still be there and... let me not be too late.
The farther he drove from downtown, the more the scenery along the road began to change. The high-rise buildings gradually gave way to an old warehouse district filled with industrial buildings whose paint had long since peeled away. Large trucks were parked in several corners, while the roads became increasingly deserted. Some of the warehouses appeared to have been abandoned, leaving behind vast lots overgrown with wild grass.
Chris slowed the car slightly as he entered the western outskirts of the city. If he were a kidnapper, an isolated area like this would indeed be the perfect place. Very few people passed through these roads, the rumble of heavy machinery in the distance could easily mask other noises, and there were plenty of abandoned buildings along the route that could serve as secret hideouts.
Hope began to rise in Chris's chest once more. He reached for the phone connected directly to the vehicle's navigation display. The red marker on the digital map was now only a few hundred meters away.
"In two hundred meters, you will arrive at your destination," the automated navigation voice announced flatly, breaking the silence inside the cabin.
Chris stared straight ahead with complete focus as his heart pounded even faster. He imagined Naomi being held captive inside one of the old buildings nearby, frightened as she waited for someone to come and save her. The car gradually slowed. Chris's eyes continuously swept from one side of the road to the other.
A logistics warehouse. An overgrown vacant lot. A rusted iron fence. An abandoned old building. Then...
"You have arrived at your destination."
Chris instinctively frowned as his car came to a stop by the side of the road. Standing before him was nothing like the abandoned warehouse or suspicious cluster of old buildings he had been expecting all this time. Instead, there was a two-story house in a classic style with a spacious, neatly maintained yard. The lawn had been trimmed short, flowers bloomed beautifully along the stone path leading to the porch, and two family cars were parked quietly in the open garage.
