No one spoke after what Cale said. It was as if the entire room had suddenly lost the ability to think.
Then ... Chris choked violently. The coffee he had just taken a sip of nearly sprayed out of his mouth. He immediately doubled over, pounding his chest several times.
“You lunatic!” he burst out once he could breathe normally again. “Are you actually trying to kill me?”
Meanwhile, Naomi didn't even blink. She simply stared at Cale without looking away. Her expression slowly shifted from confusion to disbelief. Then irritation. Intense irritation. Without realizing it, her hands had clenched into tight fists.
“I refuse.”
The answer came so quickly that Chris turned toward her. “Hey, I haven't even agreed yet,” he protested.
“You don't need to answer that fast,” Cale replied casually.
“Then don't drop a bomb like that!” Chris shot back indignantly.
He glared at his only brother in annoyance. If their father and mother weren't sitting right there, he might have already thrown his coffee cup at Cale. How could he say something like that so casually?
Nathan rubbed his temples slowly, while Riana genuinely could not understand how Cale's mind worked. Daven, on the other hand, kept letting out long, weary sighs.
As for Lydia, she lowered her head, suppressing a faint smile. For some reason, she had already suspected her husband was about to say something ridiculous. Even so, she hadn't expected Chris's name to be dragged into it.
“No,” Naomi repeated more firmly.
This time, everyone's attention returned to her.
“I am not getting married.”
“Nao—”
“I didn't even know the Devereux family before this,” Naomi cut in quickly. “I don't remember much about my family. Most of my life was spent in Berlin.”
Her breathing became uneven, and her chest rose and fell with each breath. The emotions she had been trying so hard to suppress were finally beginning to surface. “I only found out about all of this a few months ago, and now you're talking about marriage?”
Her gaze shifted to Cale. “And why should someone else get to decide what happens to my marriage?”
She looked directly at him, her eyes unwavering. “This is my life, Mr. Cale.” Her voice wasn't loud, but it was enough for everyone in the room to realize just how serious she was.
“This is my personal matter,” Naomi said firmly.
“Naomi.”
“No.” Naomi shook her head immediately. “You’re crossing the line this time. Way too far.”
The room fell silent again. But unlike before, this silence was heavy with tension. Anyone who knew Cale knew that very few people dared to speak to him that way.
Yet Cale remained completely unfazed. His gaze moved calmly across the room, assessing each reaction from his family members one by one. Then he leaned back against the sofa and fixed his eyes on Naomi.
