Chapter 540
Selena.
The line rang.
Once.
Twice.
Connected.
“Selena-” he said quickly, his voice tense and urgent. “Listen to me. The situation isn’t-”
Before he could finish, someone slammed into his shoulder hard enough to knock the phone from his hand. It hit the floor and skidded away.
Bret lunged for it—but a shoe came down first.
The man who had bumped into him stepped directly on the device.
The screen cracked instantly. Then it went dark.
“What the hell are you doing?!” Bret snapped, fury rising.
The man looked down at him, wearing a mildly surprised expression.
“Oops.” A faint smirk tugged at his lips. “Sorry. Didn’t see you,” he said casually.
Bret glared at him, hatred burning in his eyes. “You did that on purpose.”
Chris shrugged. “If I had, your phone would be completely destroyed.”
“You bastard,” Bret hissed.
Chris didn’t respond. He simply walked past him as if nothing had happened.
“I’m not finished with you!” Bret shouted after him.
Chris paused for a moment and glanced back over his shoulder.
“I know,” he said calmly. “It’s not. Not yet.’
Then he continued walking, unbothered, leaving Bret behind to curse and seethe in frustration.
Bret stared at his cracked phone, his breathing heavy. His chance to speak with Selena was gone.
“Damn it!”
Meanwhile, Chris walked down the corridor toward the administrative office with steady steps. He pulled out his phone and opened his contacts.
Richard.
He typed quickly.

Bret is looking for a lawyer. Make sure he doesn’t get a competent team. Control the channel.
A reply came seconds later.
Understood. We’ll direct him to a firm that works with us.
A faint smile curved Chris’s lip. He paused briefly by a glass window overlooking the parking area.
“Your game is over, Bret,” he murmured.
He typed another message.
Speed up the trial process. I’ve just submitted new evidence. I assume Arsen has already sent it to you as well?
The response came almost immediately.
Yes, Mr. Chris.
Chris locked his phone and continued on his way.
Back in the waiting area, Bret sat stiffly, his face tense. He tried to turn his phone on again, but the screen flickered once before going completely dark.
“Idiot,” he muttered under his breath.
He stood and approached the officer stationed nearby. “I need another phone. I have to contact my lawyer.”
The officer replied shortly, “Your request will be processed according to procedure.”
Bret exhaled sharply. “Don’t take too long. You don’t want this process delayed either, do you?”
There was no response-nothing that offered even the slightest reassurance.
Irritated at being ignored, Bret returned to his seat and leaned back. His thoughts drifted to everything that had happened.
Just a few hours ago, he had been certain everything was in his grasp. The leadership seat. Control of the company. A future he had carefully planned. And now… he couldn’t even reach a single person who might help him.
He had expected Daven to carry the burden for a crime he never committed-while he himself stood at the top.
So why was he the one sitting in the SunCity Central Investigation Office now?
And why were the very documents that should have been destroyed lying neatly on the investigators’ desk?
“Damn it,” Bret muttered, squeezing his eyes shut. “I need a lawyer-someone truly competent. If I don’t, I could be looking at a very long sentence. I’m not spending the rest of my life behind bars.”
He drew in a long breath, forcing himself to think.
Yes. He needed the best defense he could get. And the one person who would know exactly who to contact was Harold. The man always had connections, always knew who could be trusted-and who could be persuaded.
But the problem was…
