He glanced at Althea, then looked back at the family gathered around them.

“Today has been a difficult day,” he continued. “But in the middle of all that, we received something we never expected.”

Althea reached for Grace’s and Josh’s hands. Both children looked up at her, confusion written clearly in their

eyes.

“Mom?” Josh asked, puzzled. “What is it?”

“I’m pregnant.”

Lydia smacked his shoulder. “That means this was something important for Althea. She wanted to share it with the whole family-not just you.”

“You-!” Lydia shot him an exasperated look. Talking to Cale sometimes required full concentration, yet moments like this reminded her he wasn’t entirely the rigid man he appeared to be.

Grace lifted her head, confused. “Mom is having another baby?”

Althea laughed softly. “Yes.”

Grace’s eyes lit up instantly. “I want a baby sister!”

Josh, meanwhile, kept staring at Althea, disbelief written all over his face. “Is that… really true?”

This time, Althea gave him her full attention. She gently smoothed the side of his hair. Just like when she had told him about Grace years ago, Josh’s expression was the same-confusion mixed with a happiness he couldn’t quite hide.

“Yes,” Althea said with a warm smile. “You’re going to have another sibling. Do you… like that?”

Josh let out a slow breath, but a small smile tugged at his lips. “Looks like our house is going to get even louder.”

Nathan added in a deeper voice, “After everything that’s happened, this family is actually growing.”
