Chapter 515

Selena looked at them both in turn, then curved her lips into a thin, bitter smile. “You’re both very good at making someone look like the villain.”

“No one did that to you but yourself,” Riana replied calmly.

Selena lifted her chin. “I’m only fighting for my daughter’s rights.”

“You’re right. I won’t deny that. And we welcomed you with open arms,” Nathan said. “Even when you crossed the limits of tolerance in this family, we still tried to accept you. But what did you do in return? You only ended up hurting your daughter even more.”

Silence settled for a few seconds.

Selena drew a long breath, then reached for her bag.

“Fine,” she said at last. “It seems this conversation will never be fair to me.”

For a moment, she simply stood there. Her chest rose and fell too quickly as her eyes swept over Nathan and Riana, one after the other-her gaze filled with wounded pride she refused to acknowledge.

She turned without waiting for a response, her steps brisk as she left the dining room. No one tried to stop her. The moment the door closed, Riana let out a long breath. The exhaustion on her face was unmistakable.

Nathan glanced at her. “Are you all right?”

Riana shook her head slowly. “I just… can’t understand it.”

Her eyes drifted to the door Selena had just shut. “Chase is incredibly lucky he never made her his wife.”

Nathan didn’t answer right away.

“But I blame Chase too,” Riana continued, her voice softer now, yet heavy with pressure. “How could he get that close to a woman like her? Close enough for a child to be dragged into it.”

Nathan rubbed his temples. “The past rarely gives us a chance to undo our mistakes.”

Riana stared at the empty table in front of them. “And now, we’re the ones left to clean it all up.”

Nathan nodded faintly. “At least we know one thing.”

“What is it?”

“I feel like… Eli isn’t like her mother.”

Riana fell silent for a moment, then nodded slowly. “That’s what makes all of this even harder.”

Nathan exhaled quietly. “I hope Daven can soon confirm whether Chase truly is Eli’s biological father. So we can finally decide where we stand.”

Nathan’s words made Riana look at him intently. “But… if Eli really is Chase’s child, what are we supposed to do about Selena?”

The corridor leading to Eli’s room should have been her destination that night. But instead… she walked right past it. Her steps turned without hesitation toward the back garden, toward a wooden bench facing a small pond where the water lay still and quiet. The garden lights cast a soft yellow glow, gentle to the eye-yet not warm enough to chase away the chill creeping through her chest.

“You were instructed to rest immediately, Miss Eli,” the servant said, still following behind her.

Eli flinched slightly, surprised. She hadn’t realized someone was walking with her-perhaps ever since she left the dining room. Maybe her thoughts were too crowded for her to notice anything around her.

“I… could you leave me alone for a while?”

The servant offered a faint smile. “Of course. It’s just that Madam Riana doesn’t wish for you to be by yourself.”

If the servant was acting under Riana’s orders, there was nothing Eli could do. Even though all she wanted right now was solitude-no voices, no expectations.

“Would you mind if I brought you a light snack?”

Eli glanced at her, and the offer suddenly sounded tempting. She had barely touched her dinner earlier- probably because the atmosphere had made her so uncomfortable. “Please do. I’d be happy to eat it.”

The servant smiled softly. “Very well. I’ll be right back.”

Once she was gone, Eli continued toward the bench in the garden and sat down slowly. Her hands rested in her lap, fingers twisting together. Tears slipped down silently, falling one by one onto the dress she was wearing. Before long, her shoulders began to tremble, soft sobs escaping her lips.

She stayed like that for quite some time before finally lifting her face, staring at the reflection of light rippling across the water’s surface. She had thought that crying might ease the tightness in her chest-but the weight was still there, pressing from within. Heavy. Stubborn. Refusing to leave.

Soft footsteps approached.

The same servant stopped a few steps away from where Eli sat. For a moment, she simply watched her young mistress crying there in the garden. Remembering what had happened in the dining room, she understood why the girl had chosen to be alone, trying to calm herself.

“Miss Eli,” she called gently. “I brought you some snacks and warm milk.”.

Eli turned toward her, quickly wiping away her tears. She tried to smile, though it was difficult.

“Thank you. Please just sit them there. I… I’d still like to be alone for a bit.”

The servant nodded kindly. “Of course. If you need anything, just call for me.”

“Thank you,” Eli repeated softly.

The servant placed the small plate and the glass of milk on the stone table nearby-clearly meant for anyone who wished to sit and enjoy the garden. Then she stepped back quietly, keeping her distance but not leaving entirely. She remained where she was, fulfilling her duty-to watch over Eli until she finally returned to her
