Chapter 502

“I did all of this,” Selena continued, “not for sensation-but to clear my child’s name. So no one can say she took advantage of the situation.”

Nathan stood rigid a few steps behind them. His jaw tightened, but he didn’t interrupt. He knew-every word Selena spoke had been chosen with meticulous care. Everything she said was meant to cleanse her own image: throw a bomb of shock at others, then, once she got what she wanted, shield herself by twisting the narrative.

He should never have given this woman an opening. And yet… there was one certainty he held onto-one day, she would fall by her own words.

“I think that’s all,” Selena concluded. “Thank you.

She pulled Eli away before any follow-up questions could be asked. The reporters shouted again, but security moved swiftly, clearing a path toward the waiting car.

Inside the vehicle, the atmosphere shifted completely. Selena smiled, deeply satisfied, and instructed Hans to drive them to the Miller family residence.

“A pleasant ending,” she said, leaning back. She thoroughly enjoyed the sight of reporters still chasing after the

car.

Eli, on the other hand, sat stiffly, both hands resting in her lap.

“Mom,” her voice was barely audible. “Why did you say that?”

Selena turned casually. “Say what?”

“That we’ve been accepted by Dad’s family,” Eli whispered. “When we haven’t-have we?”

Selena gave a small smile. “That’s a matter of perspective.”

“No,” Eli objected softly. “That isn’t true.”

Selena studied for a long moment before speaking again. “Enough. You don’t need to make a fuss. Just enjoy what you’re about to receive starting now. You’ll live in that house. You can see your grandmother anytime. Eat with her. Aren’t you supposed to feel happy? Grateful?” Her tone hardened slightly. “You should thank me, Eli. Because of me, you get to go home to your family.”

Eli lowered her head again. Her chest felt tight. She knew her mother was pressuring her once more-using things that made her doubt herself. This time, she didn’t have the strength to fight back.

The drive to the Miller family estate passed in a silence that felt suffocating to Eli.

When the massive gates finally opened, Selena let out a satisfied breath. “Finally,” she murmured. “This is what we should’ve had from the very beginning.”

Eli stared at the grand structure before her-majestic, quiet, and utterly unfamiliar. There was no sense of home. No warmth. Only a fear that settled deep inside her.

“You see?” Selena went on, as if reading her thoughts. “You should have been here from the moment we first came to SunCity.”

“I’m not sure,” Eli replied softly.

Selena turned on her at once. “Don’t start again. Can you not push my patience?”

Eli lowered her head.

They were greeted by two house staff, their manner formal and restrained. They glanced briefly at Selena and Eli -polite nods, carefully measured words. There was no warmth in their welcome, but Selena didn’t seem to care.

“Which one of you will be assigned to me?” Selena asked arrogantly. “When we stayed at the apartment, Mr. Miller provided a personal assistant just for me. Or…” Her eyes narrowed. “Where is Silvia?”

The two exchanged a look before one of them spoke.

“For that matter, we can’t proceed without Mrs. Miller’s approval. As for Silvia, I believe she has been reassigned to her previous department. She’s currently in the right-wing pavilion, serving Mrs. Althea.”

“What?” Selena frowned deeply. “How did that happen?”

“I’m not sure, ma’am. Everything was arranged by Mrs. Miller.”

Selena clicked her tongue in irritation.

“Your room has already been prepared,” one of the staff said.

Selena still hadn’t shaken off her annoyance. “Then show me. Quickly. I want to rest. Besides, my daughter is exhausted after everything she’s been through today.”

“Please follow us, ma’am.”

As they walked inside, Selena leaned closer and whispered, “Remember this day well, Eli. The world already knows this is where you belong.”

Eli stopped for a moment. “But I don’t want it like this.”

Selena turned to her, eyes sharp. “Your wishes don’t change reality.”

Inside that house, Eli felt herself shrinking. Every step grew heavier, every breath felt wrong. She knew that even though she was now inside the Miller family home-her father’s family home-she hadn’t truly been accepted.

And the most painful part was this-everyone outside believed it was all over.

When for Eli, this was only the beginning of something far more frightening.

“Oh, I didn’t expect a welcome like this,” Selena said as soon as they entered the living room, where Althea and another woman about Althea’s age were already seated. “May I join you after I see where my room is? I’m part of this family now too.”
