“Yes,” Nathan nodded. “And you should know-your age now is almost the same as his was when he first dared to talk back to me. Your tone, the way you hold back your emotions… it’s remarkably similar.”
Josh tell silent for a moment. Something warm settled in his chest every time his grandfather spoke about his dad like that.” Really?”
۱۱
“Really,” Nathan said with a smile. “And Grace- he glanced at fe rearview mirror again, “-you know? Your laugh is just like his. The way you scrunch your nose when you disagree, too. Exactly the same.”
Grace laughed even wider, proud. “I’m like Daddy!”
“You’re like both Daddy and Mommy,” Nathan said gently. “Thats a wonderful combination.”
The car stopped at a red light. Nathan reached for a tissue from the front compartment and handed it back. “Wipe your mouth first. Don’t let your teacher think you had breakfast while running
Grace giggled. “I’ll be there soon. And I’m ready to learn.”
“Good. That’s an excellent attitude.”
As the school gates came into view, small footsteps were already darting across the courtyard. Miss Spencer stood waiting at the main lobby. Nathan slowed the car and pulled into the drop-off area.
“Don’t forget your lunch,” Nathan reminded her.
Grace nodded quickly, opened the door, then paused. She turned back, leaning toward the window. “Grandpa, you’ll come to my game on Sports Day, right?”
“If you invite me,” Nathan replied without hesitation.
Grace beamed. “I invite you.” She leaned in to plant a quick kiss on Nathan’s cheek, then waved at Josh. “Bye, Grandpa! Bye, Josh!”
Josh responded with a small click of his tongue, half a wave. Nathan waited until Grace had fully entered the school gates, his eyes following her small figure until it disappeared into the crowd. Only then did the car pull away.
The atmosphere inside the car grew quieter. Josh stared out the window for a moment before speaking softly. “Grandpa… do you often see ‘Daddy’ in us?”
Nathan didn’t answer right away. He took a breath, then said, “Yes Especially in you, Josh. There are so many things about you that remind me of him. Not so much in your looks… but in your nature, the way you carry yourself. It truly makes me feel like Chase is still around us.”
Josh looked at him in disbelief. Nathan had never spoken so sentimentally before. To Josh, his grandfather had always been someone admirable and strong-especially after the family’s grief when Chase left them so suddenly. Nathan had stood firm, holding everyone together.
“Maybe because I spent so much time with him,” Josh said quietly “So… without realizing it, I end up copying a lot of things from Daddy,”
“That’s a good thing.” Nathan smiled warmly, ruffling Josh’s hair with affection. “It means I don’t feel alone when I miss Chase. Because I have you here, in our family.”
Josh returned a faint smile.
“There’s something you need to know, Josh.” Nathan glanced at on briefly. “There may be many things troubling you lately,”
“About Eli?”
Nathan chuckled. “Your sensitivity is undeniable.”
Josh let out a long breath. “I can’t deny it when her name comes

“To us, you are our first grandchild-precious beyond measure,” than said gently. “You are the child who united your parents sincere love. You brought together bonds that were once scattered, and over time, those bonds have grown stronger. Stronger with each passing day.”
