Throughout the journey to the Miller family home, Chris glanced at Eli several times from the front seat. Ever since they had left the lobby of the sports building, the man had seemed like he wanted to ask something, but he kept holding back until, eventually, his curiosity could no longer be contained.
“Eli, what exactly happened back there?”
“Nothing serious, Uncle Chris,” Eli replied, trying to remain calm.
“Not serious?” Chris raised an eyebrow. “From the look on your face earlier, I’m not convinced it was just something insignificant.”
Eli let out a soft sigh.
She knew Chris was only worried about her, but she really did not want to bring the problem home. Especially since she had raised her voice several times and looked at the person she was talking to with a sarcastic gaze. So it was only natural for Chris to be suspicious.
“I already dealt with it earlier. I hope there’s nothing else that will upset me. Now, can we just enjoy dinner? I don’t want anyone to worry because of my problems on campus. Besides, it’s only a trivial matter.”
Chris looked at her for a few seconds through the rearview mirror before finally nodding. “All right. But if you change your mind, don’t keep everything to yourself.”
Naomi, sitting beside Eli, then gently stroked the girl’s hair. “Chris is right. If you need someone to talk to, call me whenever you want. Don’t keep it all bottled up by yourself.”
Eli smiled faintly. “I know.”
“Good.” Naomi smiled. “Now forget about everything for a while. Let’s go home and eat.”
“Right,” Grace chimed in. “I’m already hungry.”
“Mom just texted me. She made roast beef with all kinds of sauces. I hope there’s cheese sauce.”
“Oh, Josh.” Naomi shook her head in disbelief. How could that young man love cheese so much more than anything else?
Not long afterward, their car entered the courtyard of the Miller family home. As soon as the door opened, warm voices immediately welcomed them from inside the house. Riana was already standing near the family room with Nathan, while Althea and Lydia were there as well.
Seeing Eli arrive with Naomi and Chris, Riana’s face immediately lit up.
“Eli!” Riana immediately approached and hugged her tightly. “You’re finally home. Mom has been waiting for you.”
“I missed you too,” Eli replied with a soft laugh, returning the middle-aged woman’s hug with longing.
Nathan patted Chris on the shoulder when the man walked in. “You’re late. We almost sent someone to pick you up.”
Chris chuckled. “Don’t blame me. I’ve been trying to get them home as quickly as possible.”
“The important thing is that everyone is together now,” Althea said with a smile. She then reached for Eli’s hand. “Come on, dinner is ready.”
