Hans’s lips tightened as he bent to pick up the card. It was an entry pass to the King's Club.
"The person who attacked me was…" Hans’s eyes widened, his fingers clenching the card.
"My dear uncle," Chad said, a strange, cold smile on his lips. "The one who always claimed to love me like a son. He wants to take advantage of my conflict with Thaddeus, weaken my forces, and make it easier to control me. Ever since he was sentenced to life for murder and then escaped, he hasn't set foot in this country. All his operations are based in Helgen. He allowed the Austin family and the Austin Group to collapse to create the illusion that he had cut all ties here. But now, my dear uncle is willing to risk exposing his men in Elmsworth just to get at me. What a generous gift. It seems he doesn't trust his only living relative."
Hans's gaze was downcast, his expression unreadable. "He's wary of you. He's afraid you'll become too powerful."
"Too powerful? Mason Austin is nothing more than a stepping stone for me to consolidate my overseas power and gain entry into the King's Club. Once the new drug is successfully developed, I will replace him as their honored guest," Chad said, his eyes gleaming with the ambitious dreams of a ruler.
The new drug. The words made Hans's temples throb. He thought of Elsie, the woman imprisoned in that abandoned hospital, suffering in darkness, destined to become a human test subject. The thought made his brow furrow, but his voice remained impassive. "What are your orders?"
"First, we must secure the A5 Project. It's my ticket into the King's Club's inner circle."
Just then, his phone rang. He looked at the caller ID, and his handsome face darkened. "Sean," he said, his voice flat.
"Ah, Mr. Abernathy…" Sean chuckled nervously. "I know this is a difficult time for the Abernathy Group. I apologize for bothering you…"
