Cassius hadn't known the nickname either, but he knew the truth behind her deployment. Evadne had thrown herself into a deadly war zone, risking her life daily, for one single reason: to be closer to Thaddeus.
Even if it meant watching over him from the shadows, where he would never even know she was there, it had been enough for her.
"Captain Holt, what do you mean Thaddeus has been looking for her?" Cassius asked, his voice suddenly hoarse as he gripped Derek's arm.
"During the conflict in Country L, the hospital where 'Paloma' worked was overrun by terrorists," Derek explained, his voice shaking with residual adrenaline. "Thaddeus led a strike team in to extract the hostages, but they were heavily outgunned. Half his squad was wiped out, and he took shrapnel to his left leg. He was bleeding out. Just when he thought it was over, this girl—Paloma—appeared out of nowhere. She risked her own life and dragged him out of that hellhole entirely on her own."
Derek's eyes were red now, overwhelmed by the memory. "Thaddeus told me he was fading fast from blood loss, and because she was wearing heavy surgical gear, he never got a clear look at her face. But he never forgot her. Not for a single day. He has been quietly searching for the woman who saved his life for years, but he always hit a dead end.
"I used to tell him to let it go. The medics stationed in Country L came from all over the world. How was he supposed to find one anonymous girl on a planet of billions? It seemed impossible."
Cassius's breathing hitched. "Then how do you know my sister is Paloma?"
"When I went to visit Thaddeus at the field hospital the next day, she was sitting by his bed. The nurses said she hadn't slept a wink. I walked over to thank her, but she panicked. It was like she was terrified of being recognized. She yanked her mask up and practically sprinted out of the room. I only caught a split-second glimpse of her face, but she was strikingly beautiful, completely barefaced. Because it was so fast, the memory faded over time. But the second I saw that photo on your phone... it all clicked!"
Derek was practically buzzing with excitement. "Your Highness, where is Ms. Evadne right now? I need to call Thaddeus! I have to give him the news!
"The savior he's spent years looking for was right in front of him this whole time!"
The entire family stood paralyzed in shock.
