A thick, metallic taste surged into Thaddeus’s throat, choking him. Emeric and Arnold stood frozen, their faces etched with shock. Arnold could feel his father’s arm tense under his hand, his palm turning ice-cold. Evadne was the center of their universe, the very core of his father’s life. To see her hurt, time and time again, in this entanglement with Thaddeus—both physically and emotionally—was unbearable.
Even when Thaddeus had truly loved her, even when he had humbled himself and walked through fire for her and their family, could his father truly forgive him for letting his most precious daughter nearly die?
Especially now. Now that Thaddeus, his mind altered, no longer loved her… The thought was a thorn twisting in his father’s heart.
Chad continued to stare at Thaddeus, his dark eyes growing colder, the emotions within them swirling like an untouchable abyss. “Your first mistake was knowing how much your promise meant to her, agreeing to it, and then breaking it. Your second mistake was no longer loving her, yet still indulging in the feeling of having a brilliant, noble woman debase herself for you, humbling herself to the dust. You gave her hope, again and again, only to plunge her back into despair.”
Thaddeus’s knuckles turned white as he gripped the bedsheets. His head felt as if it had been struck by a blunt object, and his vision swam with darkness. Evadne had said almost the exact same words to him just last night. Hearing them now from Chad’s lips, the impact was devastating, the humiliation absolute.
Having vented his fury, Chad seemed to relax. He drew back, his long lashes lowering as he leaned against the back of his wheelchair. “Originally, I had hoped to have this conversation in private, just between us brothers. Ms. Evadne is your pride and joy, Mr. Ashbourne, and I didn’t want to upset you or damage Thaddeus’s relationship with your family. But Thaddeus, you didn’t give me that chance. I don’t know what I did wrong to create such a distance between us.”
He sighed, a sound laden with feigned regret. “But I suppose if a love as profound as yours and Ms. Evadne’s could end this way, then the bond between brothers… is also just a relic of the past. I won’t blame you.”
Throughout the entire tirade, Thaddeus remained silent. Only his eyes, red-rimmed and bloodshot, betrayed the turmoil within, as if he hadn’t slept for days, nights, an eternity.
After a long moment, his clenched fists slowly relaxed. He opened his eyes, his gaze deep and resolute. “Gordon, get my clothes. I’m checking out.”
Gordon’s eyes widened in alarm. “Mr. Thaddeus, you can’t! The doctor said you lost a lot of blood. Your condition is stable, but you need to stay for observation…”
“No. My father and grandfather cannot find out I’m in the hospital.” Thaddeus took a deep breath, fighting through the pain. With a fluid motion that spoke of his military past, he swung his legs off the bed and stood tall. “If word gets out that I’m injured, it will affect the Abernathy Group. I cannot fall. And I will not give anyone an opportunity to take advantage of it.”
