Not to mention, it wasn't guaranteed that Cecily would look for Caleb after her escape. If she had a sane mind, she would know he would never believe her like he used to again.
He confidently believed in himself, yet on that night, he was proven utterly wrong.
When Caleb was stopped outside the club by a woman who resembled Cecily, his expression was as if he had seen a ghost. In fact, it was no different from seeing a ghost.
Never mind the traumatic experience he shared with Marie getting trapped inside the doll, but even the sight of her current state was enough to evoke terror within him.
He had previously heard Scott describing Cecily as worn out and disheveled but hadn't seen her for himself as he was trapped inside the doll. Now that he had, it was atrocious.
After receiving the funds from Diego this morning, Cecily tidied up herself. Despite that, she couldn't conceal the lifelessness that surrounded her.
With her fortune depleted, she not only aged rapidly, losing all the collagen in her face, but her voice also became hoarse and scratchy, robbing her of the stunning youthfulness she once had.
At least, for Caleb, the butterflies in his stomach were gone. Instead, he felt an overwhelming urge to run from her.
The terror on his face was fleeting. In the next moment, his expression darkened as he roared at her, "How dare you show up in front of me!"
How dare she do that? How was that different from assuming he would foolishly believe and indulge in her again?
His reaction was well-expected by Cecily. Her tears, which had been brewing for a long time, suddenly streamed down her face.
"Cal…" She tried to call him in an endearing way like she used to, but her voice came out like a vinyl scratch.
Cecily ignored her imperfections and stared pitifully at Caleb. "Cal, will you please help me? You're the only one I can trust in this world."
No longer inching toward him, she crouched to the floor and hugged her knees, sobbing. That posture was the same as when she cried as a child—a sight that Caleb was the most familiar with.
"Cal, please help me. I don't know what else I can do. It wasn't me who harmed you and Grandma; it was the system! It c-controlled my body…" she cried.
Caleb looked grim and unhesitatingly refuted, "Do you seriously take me as a fool, Cecily? You think I'd believe you again with a made-up excuse?"
Hugging her knees, Cecily looked up at him with a face full of tears. "I know you won't believe whatever I'm saying now, but I'm telling the truth. I watched as it controlled my body to harm you guys, yet I could do nothing…"
She continued, "The helplessness of having your soul trapped and only being able to watch from the inside… Cal, you know how that feels."
Caleb's gaze flickered, and his thought jolted back to the six days he was trapped inside the doll. He knew that feeling all too well.
