Witnessing the waver in Caleb's eyes, Cecily continued pumping her sob story.
"Cal, don’t you know me? You should know what kind of person I am after all the years we grew up together. No matter what, I would never do such a thing to you and Grandma, and neither do I have the ability to do so…
"I deserve your resentment after what I did to you, and it was partly my fault as well. The reason why the system used you as the first target was because it knew you're the one I care about the most…
"To punish me for my non-compliance, it forced me to harm the Jensens… It was all my fault, Cal. I'm so sorry," she cried.
With tears streaming down her face, she spoke through her sobs, wailing. Even if her appearance and voice were far from what they used to be, they still tugged at Caleb's heartstrings.
He still remembered how tiny and adorable Cecily was when she first came to the Jensen residence. Back then, Scott disliked her and often bullied her. Afraid to lash out at him, she hid in the corner, hugged her knees, and secretly cried.
It was also then Caleb started to feel sympathetic for her. As time passed, his desire to protect her grew stronger.
While he was trapped inside the doll, he had once contemplated whether she had any plight that made her do it. Today, she told him the answer.
Should he believe her, though?
Caleb closed his eyes briefly and asked her, "How do I know whether you're telling the truth?"
Cecily was secretly delighted. She quickly rose to her feet and said, "Look at me now; that's the proof, Cal."
She pointed at her face and continued lying. "The system knew I wouldn't take its order to harm others, so it took away all my fortune. It's precisely because I lost my fortune and vitality that I end up like this…"
He froze. "You look like this because the system drew all your fortune?"
He thought that was the backlash of using dark arts. It sure looked like it.
Unaware of his thoughts, Cecily asked with reddened eyes, "I'm no longer how I used to look, Cal. Will you find me ugly?"
Another wry smile appeared on Cecily's face. "Do I look like I have any reasons to lie to you now? Anyway, stay safe. I truly don't want to see any of the Jensens in danger again… G-Goodbye."
While saying that, she seemed reluctant yet turned around resolutely before heading to where she came from.
Under the warm glow of the streetlights, her figure appeared increasingly forlorn and frail. Within such a short distance, she stumbled several times.
A hint of painful struggle flashed across Caleb's eyes at the sight of her retreating figure. Right before she was about to leave the street, he called out for her. "Cecily!"
Her footsteps came to a stop, and she slowly turned her head.
Subsequently, she saw Caleb pulling a long face and walking toward his car. Once he unlocked it, he looked at her again, his face conflicted and helpless. "Get in."
Cecily seemed to be enveloped in overwhelming joy, gazing at him in disbelief with tears in her eyes. While her face was filled with emotion, deep down, she felt an immense sense of pride.
