Goodbye, Mr. Ex: I've Remarried Mr. Right novel Chapter 1904

Marion was there on the day Shawn died.

Shawn had ruled the area for 30 years. Now he was just an old man with gray hair and murky eyes.

Holding power wasn't as fancy as people thought. He had lived in constant fear, watching his back.

"Go in peace," Marion muttered. "I'll take over the Bernard family and make it great."

His loyal men stood behind him.

"You got rid of Robert and sent Drake away for this, didn't you?" Shawn asked, slumped in his chair.

He'd suspected Marion when Drake left. To test him, Shawn ordered Robert's death. Marion complied.

Shawn was ruthless, but he had never touched his brothers.

Marion was cold-blooded, a trait that would help him rise higher in this chaotic land.

Shawn smiled, waiting for what was coming with ease. Marion held a syringe filled with a lethal dose of drugs.

"I have a last wish."

"Go ahead."

"Cathryn is my only daughter. I hope you can look after her, no matter what you become."

"I'll keep her alive. That's all I promise."

Shawn closed his eyes. "Good. Your path will be harder than mine."

At dawn, Cathryn collapsed, sobbing over Shawn's death.

Marion kept his word, sparing her. Maybe he hoped someone would do the same for his family if his time came.

"The old guards are either killed or locked up," his man said. "You make the rules now, Boss. Why aren't you happy?"

Marion's path to the zenith of power was legendary. Few people could achieve such a feat in their lifetimes.

His followers all worshipped him.

"Sadness for the loss of my kind, maybe," Marion muttered.

He might end up the same one day.
