Goodbye, Mr. Ex: I've Remarried Mr. Right novel Chapter 1903

Their place was cramped, barely 20 square feet. A big bed was the only piece of furniture.

It was dim even during the day, with a single bulb lighting the place. It was not fancy but better than most shacks in the slums.

"Tomorrow, Shawn Bernard is coming to recruit bodyguards," Drake said. "What's the plan?"

He had heard the news from a customer of their club.

"Mr. Bernard is a big shot, rivaling the Eaton family. Working for him means legal status and a better life," Robert said, ready to go for it.

They couldn't sneak around like that forever. The twilight years of stowaways were terrible.

"Marion?" he asked.

Marion nodded. "Yeah."

Robert clapped his shoulder. "Let's do it."

"Hold up," Drake chimed in. "Forgetting me?"

Robert shrugged. "You're a lousy fighter. Shawn's tryouts are brutal. Losers don't walk away."

He had done dirty jobs for others over the years, knowing certain rules of the underworld.

To dig deeper, he needed power.

Shawn was old. Joining the Bernards was a chance for him.

"Avenge your parents." Caleb's words echoed in his mind.

The tryouts were a bloodbath. Candidates fought to the death in a cage. Marion clawed his way out, earning a spot as Shawn's bodyguard.

Shawn was cunning but sentimental in his old age. He treated Marion like a son.
