Lindsey's hand trembled and the phone in her hand nearly fell onto her plate.
She hastily turned it off and flipped her phone face down on the table, but she was not sure if Zayn had seen it. Lindsey looked up and saw the man that appeared from behind. She tried her best to regain composure and said, “Nothing, just a short video. You’re done discussing?"
Zayn did not probe further probably because the atmosphere between them was too harmonious. He just nodded and said, "Yup."
"Have you eaten yet?" Lindsey forced herself to carry on the conversation as she tried to calm her pounding heart.
Zayn propped both hands on the back of her chair and looked down at her. "I've eaten. Quentin has some work matters to report to me. If you're not feeling well later, get someone to accompany you. I'll be back soon."
Lindsey nodded. It was surprising that Zayn even explained his whereabouts so clearly. If she did not respond, it would seem a little strange, so she said dully, "Okay."
The man suddenly lowered his head and planted a kiss on Lindsey's forehead before calmly getting up to leave.
Lindsey could still feel the residual temperature on her forehead and forgot all about the video earlier.
When Quentin was in front of Zayn, he would restrain the smile that was constantly on his face and would give off a completely different vibe. "Shaun Juhl said that Yvette Wendell told him about meeting the Young Madam, so he went to Harrisburg to bring her back."
Zayn held a black slip of paper in his hand and gently folded it into a triangular shape before unfolding it again. After a while, he responded, "You believe what he said?"
Quentin shook his head. "I don’t believe him. He said it too willingly, so it doesn’t seem to be true. Also, when Yvette Wendell arrived in Atlantic City, the Young Madam’s impersonator had already boarded the flight. I also checked the places Shaun's car had been in the past two days. He went to the Wilford Residence twice during the night of Young Madam's disappearance and again in the early morning."
"Allie Wilford's house?"
"Yes, but he left without taking anyone with him. However, I still suspect that the Young Madam was at the Wilford Residence before being taken away by Shaun Juhl. It’s highly probable that Allie Wilford is involved in this."
Zayn had already folded the black paper into a tiny paper crane. His fingers moved slightly and the paper crane fell to the ground. Zayn's voice also became colder as he said, "Keep an eye on Shaun Juhl and Allie Wilford. Don't let go of any movements."
"Yes."
"And..." In the end, Zayn spoke again, but he thought of something and abruptly stopped. He shook his head and said, "Nevermind, you can go back now."
Zayn left first and stepped on the paper crane, which instantly became out of shape.
When Zayn went back to the room, Lindsey was already in bed with a small bedside lamp lit up beside her.
Lindsey was not asleep yet. Since Lindsey slept too much in the afternoon, she was not sleepy. She was studying a stack of photos in her hand carefully. When she heard the sound of the door opening, she looked up and met Zayn’s gaze.
She put down what she was holding and folded her two palms together, looking a little serious. "You're sleeping here tonight?"
Zayn nodded and turned around to close the door behind him. He looked calm as he asked, "Did you feel nauseous after dinner?" His tone was gentle as if he forgot that Lindsey wanted to abort their child. He sounded like a caring husband.
In contrast, Lindsey felt a little uncomfortable because of his nonchalant attitude.
"Zayn, you don’t blame me?"
The light was gentle, casting a faint glow on both their faces.
Zayn's expression was obscure in the warm light.
"Don't overthink it. Just take good care of yourself." Zayn only said this before he went into the bathroom.
When he came out, Lindsey was still not asleep, but her large round eyes were already half closed and she could barely keep them open.
