The second the Kidd family heard “Golden Glow,” they all knew exactly what was going on.

Jane was the first to react—she whipped out her phone and checked her bank account. One look at the balance and she lost it, letting out a sharp scream.

She jumped up, stormed over to Carson, and kicked him hard.

“Tell me—where did all the company’s money go?” she demanded, her eyes wild with anger.

That money was supposed to save the Kidd family. Now it was all gone, and it felt like Carson had just sucked the life out of everyone. She’d worked herself to the bone for that cash—endless nights drinking with clients, putting up with their jokes and wandering hands—just to scrape together enough to keep them afloat. And now Carson had blown through all her hard-earned money. How could she not be furious?

Jane’s stepmother rushed over, shoving Jane aside and putting herself between her son and Jane’s anger.

“Jane, what’s gotten into you? Carson’s already been through enough—what more do you want? He even broke his finger! Whatever he spent couldn’t have been that much. His usual expenses are just a few thousand. If it’s really that important, I’ll pay you back.”

Jane nearly fainted from rage. Did her stepmother really think this was just about a few thousand?

If it had only been five thousand, Jane wouldn’t have said a word. But this was five million—money she was supposed to wire to the factory for their next shipment.

Ever since her father had been taken away, the Kidd family had fallen apart. Their suppliers and business partners dropped them one by one. Jane had struggled to keep the company together on her own, and it had almost broken her.

And now, the money she’d fought so hard for was gone just like that. Her head spun, and she stumbled back a couple steps, dizzy.

Mrs. Kidd looked genuinely scared. She was way too old to be dealing with this kind of family mess.

“Jane, please, just sit down and rest for a minute.” Mrs. Kidd hurried over to steady her, then called out to the maid, “Bring Miss Jane some chicken soup, now!”
