Fiona trailed behind the housekeeper into the living room.

Even before she stepped inside, she could hear Jane’s voice echoing through the hall, arguing with someone. It was so heated that all the staff had been chased out—no one dared linger. Around here, losing your job was the least of your worries; crossing the Kidd family was much worse.

“Ms. Fiona, this way, please. I’ll take you to the door, but I won’t go in. Our young lady is waiting for you inside,” the housekeeper whispered.

Fiona nodded and walked in.

The moment she appeared in the doorway, Jane spotted her, rushed over, and grabbed her hand. Jane looked furious and didn’t hesitate to pull Fiona toward the stairs, clearly wanting to get her away from the mess downstairs.

“Nana, I’m taking Fiona upstairs,” Jane called out, not even glancing back.

This was Fiona’s first time seeing Carson. She couldn’t help but notice his hand—two fingers had been chopped off, and one was barely attached, hanging by a thread of skin. It looked bad, like it was too late for doctors to fix it. The damage was done, and there was no going back.

Golden Glow really didn’t waste any time, Fiona thought. They delivered punishment fast. She’d have to remember to reward them for their efficiency.

“Jane, I’m not just here to see you. I also want to talk to Mrs. Kidd,” Fiona said, stopping for a moment. She squeezed Jane’s hand gently, her voice calm. “Don’t worry—it’s nothing too serious.”

Jane’s stepmother, who’d been arguing with the old lady, shot Fiona a glare. “Nana, we can’t just ignore Carson’s injuries! He can’t wait any longer!” She was clearly annoyed—Fiona’s sudden appearance had completely derailed her attempt to sway Mrs. Kidd.

She was determined to fight for her son’s future, and now this girl was getting in the way.

“Mrs. Kidd, I actually came today for two reasons,” Fiona said politely. “One, to pay my respects. Two, because of Carson.”
