The moment Adrian uttered the word “breakup,” a flash of satisfaction flickered in Harrison’s eyes, like a predator sensing its prey had walked right into the trap.
He knew Adrian was bluffing. But since Adrian had gone so far, Harrison was curious to see how he’d talk his way out of this one.
“Adrian, you’ve said it yourself—so let’s see you keep your word!”
Now, Harrison was determined to force Adrian and Selene apart.
“I never agreed to break up with Mr. Shaw.” Selene’s voice rang out, clear and unwavering. Adrian’s large hand enveloped hers, and she turned to Harrison with a steady gaze. “And I’m certainly not going to let you come between us. If you think your meddling will make me leave Adrian, you’re dead wrong.”
Harrison’s face darkened instantly, as if his heart had been hurled into an abyss.
“Selene...” Adrian murmured her name softly.
She squeezed his hand in return. “You’re the one who stirred up trouble at the Thompson-Shaw merger ceremony, Harrison. If anyone should leave, it’s you—not Adrian.”
A hint of a smile touched Adrian’s lips, but Harrison felt as if someone had just slammed a sledgehammer into his chest. His ribcage echoed with a heavy thud.
Adrian seemed comforted by Selene’s unwavering stance. A glimmer of light danced in his deep-set eyes.
“You’re amazing,” he told her, as if one steadfast word from Selene was enough to satisfy him completely.
She looked up at him with a gentle smile. “Well, you are my boyfriend, after all.”
“Selene!” Harrison’s patience finally snapped. He shot up from his chair, unable to sit still any longer.
He was still right there, damn it! Yet Selene and Adrian were acting as if he didn’t exist, their eyes locked in a way that set his teeth on edge.
“Selene, there’s something I haven’t told you yet.” Adrian’s tone softened, but there was a shadow behind those sharp eyes—a sadness that hadn’t been there before, as if he’d made a difficult decision.
“Harrison didn’t stop at trying to split us up. He ordered a hacker to break into the medical center’s records and steal my confidential files. He found out I’d seen a doctor and couldn’t wait to use my medical history to threaten me—just to force me away from you.”
Selene, of course, already knew all about Harrison’s idiocy. In fact, she’d even suggested Adrian make his blunder public.
So Adrian’s words weren’t just for Selene—they were for everyone present.
He hadn’t even finished before a wave of curiosity swept through the crowd. People craned their necks and leaned in to catch every word.
