She clicked on the link without thinking.
Right then, the silence exploded. Bang. Bang. Bang. Someone hammered at the bedroom door, so hard it sounded like it might break. Dean’s voice cut through, low and tight, barely holding back his anger.
“Emmy, open up!”
Her heart dropped to her stomach. She didn’t even get a chance to read the article about herself. She had no idea her achievements were making headlines around the world. Emmy’s first instinct was to close the page, turn off her phone, and shove it under her pillow.
Only after she did all that did she finally take a shaky breath and walk to the door.
She barely cracked it open before Dean pushed his way inside. He marched straight past her to the bed, ripped the blanket back, and started searching the nightstand and the sheets with rough, impatient hands. It didn’t take long before he found her phone hidden under the pillow.
He held it up, turning to face her. His eyes were so dark and cold, she almost flinched.
“You went online behind my back?”
“What did you see?”
Emmy frowned, confused by the intensity in his voice. She didn’t get it. Sure, he might be wanted by the law, but she could live with that.
She steadied herself and answered, “I saw that you kidnapped Nelson Corporation’s wife, and now The States have you on their wanted list.”
He stepped closer, not letting it go. “What else?”
She shook her head, still lost. “Why did you kidnap her, Dean? The Nelsons are the biggest family in The States. Why would you do something like that?”
Dean watched her carefully, searching her face for any sign of a lie. Her eyes were clear and open. He finally relaxed, the tension melting away from his face. He stepped forward and pulled her into his arms, holding her tight.
“You scared me,” he breathed. “Do you realize if you go online and they track us, we’re both dead?”
Emmy tried to push him away, but he wouldn’t let go.
“Then why did you do it? Why take her? The Nelson family has power everywhere. How could you get mixed up in something like that?” She struggled, her voice rising. “Where is she now?”
Dean’s arms didn’t loosen. “She’s dead.”
“I… I killed her by accident.”
“That’s why I had to bring you here. We have to stay hidden, live off the grid.”
“Emmy, you have no one else. It’s just us now.”
“Let’s stay here, just the two of us. We’ll take care of each other. Isn’t that enough?”
Her mind spun. According to the timeline, it had already been a year since their wedding. She really didn’t have anyone left. Dean was all she had now.
But thinking about never being able to go home made her chest ache.
Dean felt her hesitation, held her even tighter, and his voice softened to a pleading whisper.
“Please, Emmy. I’m begging you. Just say yes.”
Wrapped in that heavy sadness, Emmy could only sigh, swallowing every bit of hurt and reluctance.
“…Okay.”
Dean smiled. He looked relieved, almost dizzy with happiness, but there was something else in his eyes too, something a little wild and possessive.
He leaned in, tilting her chin, and brought his lips to hers.
