He let out a quiet sigh, his voice turning gentle. “If I’d known that leaving you back then meant we’d be apart for so many years, I would’ve taken you with me when I left that mountain village.”

Claudia’s tears spilled over right away. “You have no idea… After you left, they found out I was the one who helped you escape. I got beaten so badly…” Her voice broke as she started to sob, her whole body trembling. “That’s why I risked everything to get out of that place. But now… now you don’t even want to fight for me. Ben pressed his lips together. The guilt that had been buried in his chest came flooding back, overwhelming him.
