He let out a quiet sigh, his voice turning gentle. “If I’d known that leaving you back then meant we’d be apart for so many years, I would’ve taken you with me when I left that mountain village.”
Claudia’s tears spilled over right away. “You have no idea… After you left, they found out I was the one who helped you escape. I got beaten so badly…” Her voice broke as she started to sob, her whole body trembling. “That’s why I risked everything to get out of that place. But now… now you don’t even want to fight for me. It hurts so much.”
Ben pressed his lips together. The guilt that had been buried in his chest came flooding back, overwhelming him.
In the end, he gave in. He reached into his desk drawer and pulled out the list. “Alright. I’ll try to pull these resources together and use them for us.”
Claudia managed a teary smile, then leaned over and kissed him on the cheek. Suddenly, as if she remembered something, she moved closer, her breath warm against his ear. “Oh, and Ben, I heard someone’s planning to get to you through me. If anyone tries to tell you anything strange, don’t believe them.”
Ben instantly thought of Emmy’s message. She was working with Jared now. Was she really trying to break through by targeting Claudia for Mr. Nelson?
He wanted to bring it up, but Claudia’s hand was already sliding lower, her lips pressing soft and warm against his neck. “Ben…”
Whatever he was about to say disappeared. He grabbed her by the waist and pinned her against the wide, polished desk.
…
On the weekend, at the Rain Pavilion.
She slid a thick envelope across the table toward him, then stood up. “I only came by to give you these documents. You’re busy, so take care of yourself.”
She nodded politely and walked out, leaving Ben with a stormy look on his face.
He felt like he shouldn’t have come at all. Now he’d just been shown up by someone so much younger.
He stared at the envelope, his eyes dark and unreadable. He wanted to see just what Emmy had dug up to try and turn him against Claudia.
With a flash of anger, Ben grabbed the envelope and tore it open. The moment he pulled out the first sheet and saw what was written, his eyes went wide with shock.
