Emmy’s face stayed perfectly calm as she tapped her fingers lightly on the desk. Everything was unfolding exactly as she’d expected. Juan had taken the Summer family’s poisoned bait, unable to resist, and swallowed it whole. She’d been waiting for this moment.
She didn’t say anything. Instead, she picked up her phone and dialed a number. The call connected almost immediately.
“Krystina, are you back from your trip?”
Krystina had gone through a divorce not long ago, and Emmy had encouraged her to take a break and clear her head. Emmy had already mentioned her plan: once Krystina returned, she’d officially invite her to become the CEO of Starlight Corporation.
Originally, Emmy had wanted to step into that role herself, but things had changed. She was pregnant now, and her energy was limited. Plus, she still held shares in Nelson Corporation. If she took over as president of Starlight, her connection to the Nelson family would eventually come to light, and there would definitely be people eager to stir up trouble. So she had no choice but to work from behind the scenes, holding the real power as a major shareholder.
Krystina was the perfect fit for the job. She’d started from nothing and built a small cybersecurity company into one of Riverdale’s rising stars. Her abilities spoke for themselves.
That night, Krystina rushed back to Moonlight Bay. She looked thinner, but her eyes were brighter, as if she’d finally shaken off all the darkness from her past. Emmy could tell she’d left the pain of her ex far behind.
“Emmy!” Krystina called out as soon as she saw her, her voice bubbling with excitement. “I visited Ollie’s school! You wouldn’t believe it—those kids are little geniuses, every single one of them! Ollie’s having so much fun there!”
Seeing Krystina so lively made Emmy genuinely happy. Once Krystina’s excitement faded, Emmy handed her a tablet.
“Alright, let’s get down to business.”
“Juan’s collaboration with Summer Inc. just blew up.”
Krystina’s smile disappeared. She grabbed the tablet, her eyes widening in shock at the flood of news headlines on the screen.
The next morning, Emmy and Krystina walked into the Starlight Corporation boardroom together. For Summer Inc., the failed project was just a calculated loss. For Starlight, it was a disaster. If the steady revenue from the agricultural initiative hadn’t been there, Starlight would already be facing bankruptcy.
Everyone on the board knew Juan’s days as CEO were over. When Emmy put forth the motion to remove him, not a single person objected. Even Juan’s grandfather just closed his eyes and let out a heavy sigh.
Juan sat slumped in his chair, defeated. His eyes flickered toward Emmy at the head of the table, full of mixed emotions. Only now did he truly understand how wide the gap was between them.
All the business sense he’d been so proud of seemed worthless next to Emmy’s ability to see through everything. She’d warned him about Isabel, but he’d just laughed it off, thinking she was jealous.
If only he’d listened to her, just once… Then Starlight wouldn’t be in ruins, and he wouldn’t be sitting here, humiliated and dismissed by the woman he loved most.
In the end, he realized, the real fool had been himself all along.
