Dumped My Cheating Ex. Now I'm Sleeping Next to a Billionaire CEO novel Chapter 779

Dean watched her, slightly exasperated by how sure of herself she looked, and finally decided to switch topics.

“Lately, there’s been some mysterious new player at Nelson Corporation. They’ve managed to steal several projects I had my eye on.” He frowned, clearly frustrated. “Do you have any way to help me figure out who it is?”

Emmy barely looked up. “If you can’t do it, what makes you think I could?”

“Nelson Corporation is a fortress when it comes to information. I’ve already called in every favor I have at the detective agency, and I still came up empty. Not a single clue about this person,” Dean said, his mood darkening. “Whoever they are, they’re even trickier to deal with than Mr. Nelson himself. At least when Mr. Nelson and I go after the same project, he can’t see my next move. This new person though… they always know exactly which project I’m going to invest in next. I’m always a step behind.”

Dean’s eyes suddenly flickered with uncertainty, as if a crazy theory had just hit him. “Is it possible… they’re like us?”

The idea sent a jolt through him.

“There’s no way it’s that much of a coincidence,” Emmy said, sounding completely unbothered. “Maybe you’ve just been investing in so many things lately that you can’t keep track of the trends anymore.”

“Impossible.” Dean shot back instantly, his tone sharp. “No one understands where this industry is headed in the next few years better than I do. No way someone could beat me to it.”

Just then, a waiter arrived, pushing a cart. “Sir, ma’am, your food is ready.”

The waiter set down two beautifully plated steaks and a bowl of pasta. Dean dropped the subject, at least for now.

Emmy glanced up without thinking, her eyes drifting past Dean’s shoulder, but then she froze.

James had just walked into the restaurant.

Dean tore his eyes away from James, his brow still furrowed. “The election is right around the corner. Every second counts right now.” He leaned in, voice low and intense. “If we can’t figure out who this mysterious person is, our odds get a lot worse.”

Emmy took a bite of steak, chewing slowly. “Maybe if you step back, they won’t be able to read your next move. Right now, you’re an open target. No matter what you invest in, they’re there to block you. Take a breather, then strike when they’re off guard. You might even make up for what you’ve lost.”

Dean fell silent, clearly thinking it over. It was true. Lately, every decision he made, that person was always one step ahead, almost like they could see the future too. If he stopped, maybe they’d lose track of him entirely.

Emmy watched the storm of thoughts on Dean’s face, seeing him slowly start to consider her suggestion. A tiny, almost invisible smile curled at the corner of her mouth.

This was exactly why she’d come to dinner with him tonight. The next few blockbuster projects only had one serious competitor left—Sparrow Group. She wasn’t about to let Dean get in her way.
