Emmy’s fingers curled tight on her lap, digging into the soft fabric of her lounge pants. Her heart twisted so sharply, it was hard to breathe. Her eyes burned, that familiar sting warning of tears she refused to let fall, not here, not in front of Tyler.
She lifted her head, meeting Tyler’s gaze, her voice soft but steady.
“And what about you, Mr. Nelson? Don’t you love him?”
“My love doesn’t even come close to the bond they have. Honestly, there’s barely any left now.”
Tyler stared at her, stunned. He looked like he couldn’t believe what he was seeing. After everything he’d said, all she showed was a little redness in her eyes, nothing more. No sign of breaking. He’d met tough people before, but Emmy was something else. There was a coldness to her strength he hadn’t expected.
He thought if he played the emotional card, maybe she’d give in, at least a little. Then getting her to sign the agreement with her grandmother would be easy. Clearly, that wasn’t going to happen.
So be it.
Tyler’s face went blank, all emotion gone.
“All right, I’ll get to the point.”
“James has spent years trying to get justice for Jamie.”
“But the person responsible is part of our family, holding a major stake in Nelson Corporation.”
“Even together, we don’t have enough shares to force them out.”
“The missing shares are with our grandmother.”
“And she only gives them to her grandsons’ wives and great-grandchildren.”
He looked Emmy straight in the eyes.
“That’s why I’m here. I want you to get those shares from her, then transfer them to James.”
“They’re rightfully yours anyway. When it’s over, we’ll buy them back from you for full market value.”
Emmy’s grip tightened even more. She took a slow breath, her throat dry.
“Did James ask you to come?”
Tyler smiled, gentle as ever.
“No.”
“He probably thinks you’d be upset if you knew he married you for those shares from the start.”
“He didn’t want to trouble you, so I took it on myself to come.”
