Emmy had barely swiped her key card to unlock the hotel suite before a bellhop wheeled her suitcase inside. She stared at her luggage for a second, letting her mind drift, when the hotel manager came in himself, carrying a tray loaded with breakfast.
Her stomach growled. No matter what kind of mood she was in, the baby in her belly still needed to eat.
She picked up a soft roll and took a bite. Pain shot through her gum on the left side, sharp and sour. She winced, pressing her palm against her swollen cheek. After a moment, she pulled out her phone and dialed the hospital, wanting to ask if she needed an X-ray for the swelling.
The call was picked up almost instantly by a nurse whose voice was sweet and polite. “Ms. Eincoln, good morning. Regarding your case, your health management physician has been changed to Dr. Lorelei Hall. You can reach out to her directly.”
Emmy blinked in surprise. Wasn’t Dr. Townsend her doctor?
“It’s Dr. Hall now? Since when?”
“Just yesterday,” the nurse replied, sounding a little envious. “Dr. Hall personally requested your file. You know, she’s one of the best surgeons in the Capital and usually only takes on patients from the most elite families. For her to take your case—Ms. Eincoln, you’re really lucky.”
Emmy hung up, frowning. This was the Capital’s top private hospital. Anyone with a super-premium membership could choose their own doctor to manage their care. She had signed up last year during a string of hospital stays, picking Dr. Townsend as her attending. She never imagined Dr. Hall would step in.
After some hesitation, Emmy scrolled through her contacts and found Lorelei’s number. She called. The phone barely rang before Lorelei answered, her voice as cool and clear as ever.
“Ms. Eincoln.”
Emmy kept her tone frosty. “Dr. Hall, why did you switch to managing my case?”
“Orders from above,” Lorelei replied, not bothering to explain.
Emmy’s frown deepened. “Above? Who exactly?”
“That’s not something you need to worry about. Just know that from now on, your health is my responsibility. I’ll make sure you and your baby get through this safely.”
