Emmy arched an eyebrow.
Talk about perfect timing.
She picked up her glass of water, her eyes shining with an easy confidence.
“Alright, everyone, let’s do this. I’m making a toast with water instead of wine. Here’s to the Starlight Rural Aid Project. May tomorrow go smoothly and bring us an amazing start.”
Sylvia and Krystina immediately joined in, lifting their glasses.
“To overflowing success and money rolling in!”
Sylvia grinned and added, “And here’s to us and everyone in Rochefield, growing prosperous together!”
The clear sound of clinking glasses filled the private room, echoing their hopes for what was to come.
The next morning, Emmy got up early. After washing up, she slipped into a loose, comfy cashmere dress and threw on a black puffer jacket.
Abriella seemed jittery all morning, her eyes darting around like she was expecting something to jump out at her.
And of course, what you fear always finds you.
As soon as their group stepped into the breakfast restaurant at the inn, they practically ran right into Jared, who was already eating.
The place was small and simply decorated, but just by sitting there, the man made the whole room feel heavier, like the air pressure had dropped.
He was in a plain, dark colored outfit, nothing special, but somehow he managed to make this modest little restaurant feel like a grand, important hall. Two sharp eyed bodyguards stood behind him, one on each side.
Emmy recognized him right away.
That face was exactly the same as the one she’d seen on TV in her previous life. Only now, seeing him in person, he felt so much more real, and way more intimidating.
She kept walking, planning to find a seat, when Abriella suddenly grabbed her wrist.
“What’s wrong?” Emmy whispered.
Abriella gave a frantic nod toward Jared, her eyes wide with panic. “Let’s go. Seriously, let’s get out of here and eat somewhere else.”
