She squinted at the glowing screen, struggling to keep her eyes open. The name “Dean” flashed across the display, and her brows instantly drew tight.
“Are you seriously calling me at two thirty in the morning? Have you lost your mind?”
Her voice was sharp now, wide awake and bristling with anger.
Dean didn’t seem to care at all. In fact, knowing she was alone, he actually sounded pleased with himself.
“So you’re really not with him tonight?” he pressed.
“You’re unbelievable.”
Emmy hung up without another word.
Her phone rang again almost immediately.
She ended the call.
He called back.
Emmy could feel her patience snapping. She was this close to blocking his number for good when a message popped up.
*It’s about that mother and daughter.*
Her finger froze over the screen. After a second, she sighed and called him back.
He picked up instantly.
“You better have a damn good reason for this,” Emmy snapped, her tone ice cold.
“I don’t have James’s number. Honestly, I thought he’d be the one picking up,” Dean replied.
That threw her off for a second. Now that she thought about it, every time Dean called lately, James had answered.
“If you’ve got something to say, say it,” she said, her voice a little less harsh.
“Claudia was planning to sneak Evelina out of the country before dawn. I already messed up their plan.”
He’d wrecked Claudia’s scheme, which, technically, helped the authorities. He hated James though, so of course he made sure to deliver the news himself, just to rub it in.
He wanted James to know that if anyone wanted to take down the White women, they’d need Dean’s help. Not even James could do it alone.
Emmy listened and, for a second, was genuinely surprised.
She took a breath, then spoke in a neutral tone.
“Got it. I’ll tell my husband.”
She was about to hang up when Dean spoke up again.
“Wait. It’s my birthday today. That big gift you promised—when am I getting it?”
That made Emmy laugh, the sound dry and amused. She’d never seen someone so eager for a present before.
