Emmy gasped, arms flying up to cover her chest as she spun around in shock.
That split-second glimpse—her startled face and bare skin—seared itself into James’s memory.
He froze, then quickly turned away and shut the door behind him.
Out in the hall, James leaned against the wall, swallowing hard. He closed his eyes, but all he could see was that accidental flash.
He didn’t go back in until Emmy had finished changing.
When he finally returned, he looked completely unfazed, organizing her fruit basket and suitcase like nothing had happened. Emmy’s heart, which had been pounding out of her chest, finally started to slow down.
He probably didn’t see anything... right?
James grabbed her things, leaving only her phone behind.
“Wait for me at the hospital entrance,” he said.
Emmy nodded, hurrying outside.
She had barely stepped out when she nearly bumped straight into someone—someone she recognized instantly.
Dean. He looked just as surprised to see her.
Emmy kept her face blank, turning away like she hadn’t even noticed him.
“Emmy,” he called after her, closing the distance in a few long strides. “What are you doing here?”
“That’s none of your business,” she shot back, her voice icy.
Her words seemed to hit a nerve. Something sharp flared in Dean’s eyes.
“Don’t act like just because things are over, I’m out of your life. As long as I’m alive, what happens to you matters to me. Don’t say otherwise.”
Emmy almost laughed at that.
A bitter little smirk tugged at her lips. She opened her mouth, but before she could say anything, Dean grabbed her wrist and snatched her phone away.
He punched in a code—her phone unlocked instantly.
“Still using my birthday as your password?” Dean’s mouth curled into a half-smile. “Blocking me just to get my attention? Well, you got it.”
