Emmy couldn’t help but laugh, slow and steady, before repeating herself.

“Mr. Sparrow, what makes you think I owe you anything?”

“Why should I tell you?” Dean snapped, frustration etched all over his face. “You’re my sister!”

She raised her eyebrows, completely unimpressed. “Really? Since when do brothers sleep with their sisters?”

Dean’s eyes went wide, shock flashing across his face.

Evelina had just walked over and froze, her hand flying to her mouth, her eyes suddenly glassy with tears. “Dean, you… you two… were together?” Her voice trembled. “You told me you never—”

“Don’t listen to her! She’s making things up!” Dean spun toward Evelina, desperate to explain, then turned sharply back to Emmy. “Tell her! Tell her we never did anything!”

Emmy watched him panic, her heart going cold. Of course, in this life, they really hadn’t gone too far. The most they’d ever done was kiss—nothing more. She’d said she wanted to wait until marriage, and he’d always respected her boundaries, never pushing. Even after they got married in her past life, he would always ask her first, never forcing anything.

She turned to Evelina, voice steady. “Don’t worry. He’s a gentleman. We never crossed the line.”

Dean visibly relaxed, letting out a breath he’d been holding. He looked back at Evelina, his voice soft and gentle. “I’ve never lied to you.”

Evelina’s tears vanished in an instant. She smiled, leaning on him, her trust obvious. “Of course I believe you.”

Then she glanced at Emmy, her voice all understanding and sweet. “Emmy, please don’t take it the wrong way. I’m not upset with you. I just care about Dean so much.”

“That’s fine,” Emmy sighed, her patience gone. “Can you guys move? You’re blocking my light.”

She’d somehow ended up with an aviation magazine spread across her knees, and the two of them were standing right in front of her, blocking the overhead lamp.

Dean’s face darkened, but instead of leaving, he pulled Evelina down to sit beside him.
