At that moment, Laney, who was holding Manny, could not resist gently pressing her cheek against the little guy's forehead. "Oh my god, he is so soft," she murmured. She looked up, her eyes full of envy. "I really want to have such a cute baby too."
Hearing this, Teresa chuckled and teased, "Then you should hurry up and find a boyfriend, get married, and have one of your own."
Surprisingly, a rare blush crept up Laney's cheeks, and she did not respond to the comment.
Andrew, whose mind was always sharp, immediately guessed something and blurted out in astonishment, "Do you have a boyfriend?"
The questioning tone instantly made Laney bristle with defensiveness. She raised her chin and retorted bluntly, "What? Is Mr. Aldridge going to start a background check and try to break us up?"
Andrew choked slightly at her sharp reply, but he quickly followed up with another question, "Is it a man?"
As soon as the words left his mouth, even the usually mild tempered Teresa could not help but turn and glare at him. Terrified that the father and daughter might have another misunderstanding, she quickly stepped in to smooth things over. "Laney, please do not overthink it. Your father absolutely did not mean anything else by that. He just meant that since you are dating, you should bring him back when you have the chance so we can all have a meal and get to know each other." Teresa stepped forward and gently patted Laney's shoulder, her tone incredibly soothing. "Rest assured, your father will never interfere in your private affairs again. I trust that with your good taste, the boy you chose could not possibly be bad."
However, there was no way Laney could misunderstand what her father meant by asking if it was a man. After all, the fact that her mother was a lesbian was an indelible scandal for the Aldridge family. From a very young age, her grandmother had used it as a negative example, warning her daily that she was not allowed to like girls, calling it a disease. But Laney had a rebellious streak in her bones. The more they forbade her from doing something, the more she wanted to do it just to spite them. That was why she deliberately only played with pretty girls during her childhood. Yet as she grew older and developed actual physical desires, she honestly faced her own body and realized she much preferred the company of men. During the years she lived abroad without any family restrictions, she had let herself go, changing boyfriends so often that even she had lost count.
Thinking of this, Laney let out a careless laugh. She looked at Teresa, her tone open and frank. "You do not need to explain for him, Teresa. Let him think whatever he wants. I do not care. But rest assured, when the time comes for me to actually get married, I will definitely invite you."
Teresa nodded repeatedly. "Good, good. I will be waiting for that day. Once you get married and have a baby, if you are too busy to take care of them, I would love to help you babysit."
